Rome was no more developed than other Italic tribes in 5/4 century BC. What made them great was knowing that every man in the tribe will get a wife and that kids will be his. That no alpha king will take a lot of women for himself. That's what I mean by lacked competition. The problem comes in when there is evidence that sex with slaves and prostitutes was permitted for the married male. If that's the case, then monogamy, as we define it today, was a farce in those times.
