It's finally the day. I voted earlier and went full red, the first time in my life. Couldn't even imagine it just a couple of years ago. I wanted to take stock of what's been happening around here, in a deep deep blue area.
- Signs for Biden have increased recently. Obviously no pro-Trump stuff in the City of Roses itself, but even just a quick trip outside the boundaries and I saw, surprisingly enough, a couple of pro-police signs as well as some MAGA paraphernalia. Travel a bit further out and it's probably around a 1
1:1 ratio of pro-Trump, pro-Biden, anti-Trump, and pro-police. However, the Biden stuff is stock signs bought from somewhere, whereas the other three categories tended to be more creative, handmade, or just fucking huge, with the largest being MAGA signs.
- Portland isn't a ghost town, but the number of people walking the streets even during the day have plummeted. Meanwhile the homeless problem has only exploded. Entire fucking streets are blocked off by their shitty tents, and I'm sure pictures have been posted of their parking lot tent cities. Everyone jokes about not being in the city after dark but even during the day you'll have crazies throwing shit at you, screaming at you, etc. This was happening before, of course, but not to this degree.
- I know a handful of people who have left Portland. Around half of them literally dropped everything, threw their family, pets, laptops, and a suitcase or two of clothing into their cars and just left, coming back later for more of their stuff. None of them have moved back thus far.
- Politics have been clamped down on. A month or so ago, it was "vote for Democrats" from various coworkers. Well someone must have complained, because the message changed to just "vote". Had me a bit of a giggle when the messaging changed.
- Not a single person believes Biden will win. Everyone seems resignated to four more years of Trump, even the most rabid supporter. Of course, some are espousing the viewpoint that voter fraud will be the sole reason why he will win, but most seem to realize how poor Biden is as a candidate.
- After the fires had somewhat quelled, there was a bit of an impromptu get together. Someone brought out some beer, and we all chatted for a while. The subject of the fires came up, and someone mentioned that they had caught seven arsonists responsible for a lot of the fires. One of my neighbors spoke up and said "It was more than seven. We have cops in the family. It was more than seven." He didn't seem to want to elaborate. But the words hung in the air for a while.
- COVID lockdowns have strained everyone. Even people who have steady and safe jobs they can do virtually don't want these fucking lockdowns anymore. I know a couple of people who've had family members die in hospitals without being able to say goodbye. Because of covid.
I don't believe that Oregon will turn red, that's pretty much a pipe dream. But I'm hoping that they don't give up on my state. Despite all this happening, most are still blaming Trump, or police, or whatever for everything that's happening to the city. It's all rather heartbreaking.
I'm sure whatever the result, it'll certainly be an interesting night at least with plenty of said to harvest.
