Because Vic himself isn't a horrible person.
It's all about projection. They project themselves onto Vic, Vic is the martyr to take in all their sins and evil deeds, and by taking him out, they cleanse themselves of all the wrong doings they have done. So by projecting onto Vic, they not only hide how awful they really are, but rid themselves of it.
