Late but I think this unfounded fear comes from years of people watching television, and growing up thinking that the Westboro Baptist Church and Jesus Camp were legitimate threats and not finge cults that were also being use as cannon fodder for neoconservatives.

Worst case scenario they say NOW he's suffering dementia and use it as an excuse to chuck the old fart out and bring forth your Black Kween, who will deny everything while cackling her trademark cackle.

But basically, they can't fathom that the Cubans actually believe that they are telling their version of the truth. They can't put themselves in the Cubans' shoes.

Yeah people are very weird.

The reason they do that is they identify with the myth of communism and to try to invalidate that myth is to invalidate their idenity.
