I was watching Leaving Las Vegas and thought of this. Obviously traditional gambling addictions are embarrassing but they have a certain 'mystique' about them for lack of a better word. The gambling addict has if nothing else an interesting and spectacular story. The booze the hookers the flashing lights. Waking up with the taste of vomit in your mouth broke and in a dingy hotel room. The reality of it may not be glamorous but you can spin it at least. What da heck are you going to do with 'I blew my life savings on sweaty man jpegs. Oh wait, I mean a chance for sweaty man jpegs'? Its the addiction every other pathetic addict laughs at. Even a regular paypig.
Gambling is the finest thing a person can do, if he's good at it.

I've had some great nights in Vegas while still losing. I just set aside some cash beforehand and say I'm okay with losing this and taking the chance. And when you do win there is no fucking better feeling than staggering to your room with your pockets a little heavier.

This gacha shit is pure insanity to drop more than $20 on let alone 40k. It makes a degenerate gambler look like genius in comparison.

Der Lerder had a bit during a recent MOTI where he talked about Lowtax's whaling and possible motivation for it - to summarize it's because lonely shut-in men with no power or direction but with disposable income need to feel as though they have influence and so they'll pay out the ass to be able to crush children and third-worlders who play these games.

I know we all know how much Phil likes wrestling and sweaty men in general, which is probably (definitely) what attracted him to the game to start with, but we also know how much he loves any sliver of power. That has to be what's keeping him around.

Power doesn't need to be absolute to corrupt absolutely.

great video by Mrhuth stuff, this is fucking hilarious. i'm only 6 minutes in and during a hearthstone stream/video he mentions he asked his relatives for itunes gift cards around the holidays for wwe supercard.
It's remarkable how the gacha game he hated the most turned into his most crippling addiction. Listen to how he slags off WWE Champions for being so blatantly pay-to-win. I'm guessing he paid a little too much, got a taste of the "win" side of the equation, and got hooked.

I'm thinkin he experienced too much p2w bullshit and decided to dump into it so he can finally "win". Weird how much disdain he has for it from the way he talks about it.

The way he reacts to those pulls on that waifu rpg is intense. It's like watching a serial gambler getting to spin a slot machine.

It's interesting how much changes with hindsight. I'm watching random Tevin restreams from early 2019 every so often (when DSP isn't too intolerable in them, I skipped every Phoenix Wright restream because holy shit) and notice how often DSP will spend time on his phone and even try and cover it up with "Spam email... Delete that... Get rid of that..." and how obvious now it is that he's just playing this fucking game during boring RPG talk scenes and shit. The dude has no friends, no business contacts, no one to email him except the occasional sadomasochist apology fetish, yet he constantly is on his phone deleting emails? I mean it was sus then, but now it's so obvious.

Gambling is the finest thing a person can do, if he's good at it.

"You spent $50,000 on a WWE version of Bejeweled?"
"Did you see how little Hulk Hogan is wearing!"

Gambling also has two major benefits: media portrayal and wishful thinking.

The former I'm sure you've seen. Shitty movies where the character's charisma is directly correlated with his odds of drawing a royal flush. Televised tournaments where the commentators pretend like the players are having an invisible psychic battle, the winner of which gets to draw the best cards. It tricks people into thinking that even the most "skill-based" games of chance aren't 90% luck. If everyone knew that "I'm a gambler" really meant "I'm one bad streak away from being broke and it's all completely out of my control", they'd be a lot less cool.

The latter is obvious. If the house can be beaten, you're always only a single trip to Vegas away from being a millionaire, or at least debt-free. People like that idea, so they believe it. They think "one day I'm going to learn to count cards and clean a casino out" or "all this video poker is gonna pay off when I'm playing for real". There is no such wishful thinking with gacha games because even if you get the Rank 138 Quadruple Platinum Golden Diamond dream pull you don't actually get anything out of it except maybe bragging rights. The game doesn't even become more fun because the gacha wall is specifically designed to be unfun.

The great W. Edwards Deming once memorably made a similar point. He was talking with a historian about what makes a military genius, and the historian said being undefeated in five major battles was a good measure - and that only a few percent of generals ever achieve such heights.
To which Deming pointed out that if each such battle had about 50:50 odds, then 1 in 32 generals (which is to say, about 3%) would achieve a 5-win streak purely by chance and be anointed a "genius".

I don't think Phil will like Undefeated much. It's PvP and requires some skill, not just mindlessly tapping your screen a couple times and winning 99% of the time.

That's how many whales I've been with in guilds talk. They hate it, they rip on the game developers constantly for their greed and laziness, they know how stupid it is to spend these types of money on shitty mobile games, but they can't help themselves.

Beaten housewife syndrome.
