So if that invariant gets violated, shit hits the fan?
Yeah, I think so. Because at that point the losers in the system know that there's nothing inside the system they can do to dethrone the winners. Now it's true that many societies have violated this invariant historically but there's a big difference between being born in a society that never had it and being born in one that did and see it disappear. A lot of violence will be needed to convince people to stop complaining. It won't be resolved by some smug winner telling the losers they're crazy on Twitter or CNN or that the laws have now changed and they need to get used to it. I think the Democrats fundamentally don't understand the magnitude of the task they've committed themselves to and how bad things will get if they keep trying.
The rest will play along until a Trump victory is impossible, at which that moment they'll do a 360 and say, "Yeah! Trump was an evil fascist all along! Take him away!"
You know what? If the Republicans take it to the SCOTUS and lose and there are safeguards in place for future elections then I think that's just the way the cookie crumbles. What would be intolerable would be to let the Democrats get away with this and be blatantly planning to do the same thing in all future elections.
At that point, if I were a Red State Republican I'd be making plans for an Article V convention, secession, voting to overrule Federal rules, nominating electors to the Electoral College to rebalance it, and so on. Unless a compromise can be found by the parties. Actually, there's a precedent for this,
the election of 1876, though that's not a precedent the MSM will teach you.
Can't be the only one that thought this when after so much radio silence the GOP suddently goes into overdrive backing Trump up on this one. WOOHOO It's on, bitches! The days of Romney are well over. This one's being fought to the bitter end! God please GOP don't fuck it up now.
The GOP hasn't always been composed of pussies. They impeached Clinton even though they didn't have the votes to win and the thing they impeached him over was a bit marginal. They fought a civil war. They stood up to the Democrats in 1877 and in 2000. It's hard to see them just laying down and accepting Democrat rule for all eternity, particularly the cancerous modern version of the Democrat party.
At this point I want to have a 269/269 split just to see if will end up with a Biden/Pence presidency
That sounds like a nightmare. The VP doesn't have any power. If it comes down to it I'd hold out for Trump/Harris if I were a Republican. Or just nominated electors and get Trump/Pence.
Another intriguing possibility would that Trump steps down but Biden doesn't get to be POTUS. An establishment Republican and an establishment Democrat become POTUS/VP.
I think you can tell where this going. Jeb/Hillary 2020. Why settle for one political dynasty?
Or if that's too controversial how about Jeb/Tulsi? I know the Democrats are literally the party of evil but how could you stay mad at her?
I could actually see a uber centrist Republican/uber centrist Democrat as a sort of government of national unity. The problem is, unlike a parliamentary system, the Presidential system doesn't really have any facility for this. The US system fulfills Popper's criterion for allowing the electorate to replace a bad government but it doesn't allow for parties sharing the executive branch.
The UK never stops counts, and I've never heard of counties or other areas stopping counts in the US before this.
That alone would fail to pass the smell test for many I suspect.
Not to mention that the dubious ballots arrived at 4am when the count was supposedly stopped, were 100% Biden, had no down-ballot votes, and were just sufficient to erase Trump's lead. And that in PA the Kathy Boockvar the Secretary of the Commonwealth of elections had unilaterally changed the law to make postal votes received after election day count over the objections of the state legislature.
