It's a pretty important part of PA's economy... I used to work for a Marcellus Shale oriented company, and there are a ton of wells all around the state except for the (surprise!) Philadelphia region in Southeastern PA. Most of the drilling activity has already been completed by this point, now these wells are in production mode and most of the jobs boom has subsided. A well in production doesn't really require a ton of people to operate, but those jobs that remain are some of the highest paid blue collar work in areas that really don't have any other good jobs.
