Nexpo/YT Horror Channels - Do they all suck

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Yeah the latest Nexpo video felt like cringe especially since it was his biggest video and it was basically the extremely edgy version of a "STOP BULLYING ME" video. Like the lady in question is a lolcow, but was the video really necessary since most of Nexpo's subscribers just want spooky content, they don't care much about the person running the channel.

Man I just want my creepy on, why is it that a lot of the main Horror/Spooky Youtubers tend to end up cringy as time passes?

I would honestly recommend (and seconded) ObsoleteOddity for the vintage truecrime/horror aspect. He is also pretty comfy with his vlogs where he goes on about abandoned places in Europe and vintage antiques. Another I would recommend (if not pure horror) is Pseudiom. Underrated that he tackles very obscure oddities from history and beyond. His vids on Johnny Cash in a Historical Japanese Movie, Naruto and Digimon Cults, and Werthermania being History's first taste of the Joji Sadboi Genre is amazing.

And yes, Down the Rabbit Hole is good too and still is.

Man I haven't logged in for ages but I had to when I saw this thread. Thank you for making it. Most of the horror youtube community personas never develop enough personal drama to be threadworthy on their own but as a whole the scene is just getting absurd.

I'm repeating others at this point but Nexpo's continued move towards focusing on his as a personality is an abysmal one. IMO what set him apart, besides his nice voice, was that he really didn't bullshit around much, he might ask a few rhetorical questions during his analysis but it was mostly cut-and-dry. I always thought of him as similar to Defunctland in that he really did want to place the emphasis on the content, but I guess the siren song of a growing personality cult is hard to ignore. In some ways I almost feel like he's been trying to copy Defunctand's move towards higher production value and a narrative-driven format, but it just doesn't work. The type of content he's covering doesn't mesh well with that, it just comes across goofy as fuck.

I'd like to think he's capable of pulling back if he realizes that it's alienating people but he's just kind of one part of a growing circlejerk. He, MamaMax, and NightDocs especially. It seems like they live close enough to hang out in real life and they're probably encouraging each other. It seems like LoeyLane is in contact with them more and more too.

I don't like how he stretches everything out, either. He'll end some point and leave us staring at something for another 10-30 seconds for no particular reason before moving on. I think he's trying to be dramatic, but it's just annoying.

So glad I'm not the only one bothered by this! Sometimes I'll be listening on my phone while I work and I'll have to check to make sure it hasn't turned off for some reason. But no, it's just an uncomfortably long pause. It seems like it's gotten worse.

ReignBot has the voice of a very specific kind of girl that's spent a lot of time on the internet, and she's quick to get snarky with people, but at least she's straightforward. I always liked her coverage of ARGs because she would lay the shit out clearly, explain how it all connected, and not get dramatic about it like Nexpo or fellate her own perceived mastery of the "art" of ARGs like Night Mind.

To contribute, I second Bedtime Stories. Their coverage and discussion of the Dyatlov Pass incident is the best I've listened to, and they have a good mix of classic mysterious and weird shit I've never heard before.

I also second Dark Curiosities for true crime mysteries. Her accent is a little thick but you get used to it.

I'll post again with some more recs as I scrape them together. Most of the decent and semi-decent ones have already been mentioned. I will add Beyond Creepy as a mostly-sincere recommendation. This is one of my favorite channels just because the dude is so... bizarrely mundane. He narrates allegedly true stories from basically any source with absolutely no cutoff for how stupid it sounds (stories about alien abduction mixed in with IRL muppet sightings etc) and occasionally has sections of him earnestly discussing them on what seems to be his front porch in the dark. Multiple videos have ended with him cutting himself off mid-sentence. I love this man. If you're tired of hearing the same shit over and over, his channel is refreshing if nothing else.

Honestly Reignbot's only issue is that she can occasionally come across as a bitch or preachy, but when she doesn't do that stuff she's really good.

Also Nightmind is good when he isn't being an egotistical ass or preaching about how he knows ARGs more than anyone else.

One underrated horror youtuber that I really like is FishStickonAStick who is an /x/ user who does reviews on terrible creepypasta stories/movies some of which are really interesting like his videos on Jeff the Killer, 1999, and The Borderlands

Not to mention the editing style of that whole thing seemed to be an attempt at aping Mamamax's new bs. Stop larping as an edgy hotline miami character. How does it add to the content at hand?

As it turns out Rebecca, the chick that Nexpo is bitching about, already has a thread that ended up in the spergatory. Which sucks, cause, at least now with the hindsight we can see that she spergs over every type of interaction that may be redeemed as negative.

I enjoy listening to HorrorBabble. He is a guy who reads horror fiction, a lot being wrote by H.P Lovecraft.

I remember him. It was fascinating that he covered the Kenneka Jenkins case and was so confused as to why the black community was so convinced there was foul play that the authorities just refused to look into. You can chalk me up to being a Murican who assumes everywhere else in the world views things through the same sociopolitical lens we have, but I was surprised to hear someone confused about that (and not saying CLEARLY THE COPS ARE RACISTS) in Current Year.

In some ways he's the MatPat of ARGs. The way both of them speak is also obnoxious for the same reasons to me.

Which one is it? I watch a lot of those types of channels. It's true that when youtubers start integrating more of their IRL identity, like starting to use their face or real name, they become more annoying and gay. The commentary community is another example of that.

I can’t remember, I looked and I must have unsubbed. Basically they went from just laying out the info to adding in a weird lazily-animated self-insert to argue with himself. It was cringe.

From my experiences working with creators in this genre, I would honestly say that the bigger channels just aren't worth it. Dont get me wrong im not trying to be some Horror tuber hipster, but as others have said they had they're heyday which has since passed.

Honestly the kind of content these guys continue to pump out is just stale, part of the reason a couple of us smaller guys jumped ship from the Arg/internet mystery genre. The only real people I find who present this topic effectively are the little guys. Newer channels with a more recent outlook, they in turn will get stale eventually and the cycle will reset.

If you're looking for some suggestion I would recommend two smaller ones, "The Weirdnet" and "Eudoxia Mysteries". WN is kind of odd but brings some really good editing and audio work to his videos, and EM manages to dig up some really obscure website related mysteries.

Not exactly horror, but I enjoy Plainly Difficult. His specialty is discussing nuclear disasters, why they happen, and the resulting aftermath.

I'd also recommend heavy casefiles. for true crime content, but her voice makes it sound like she needs to drink some water and the one track she plays in the back of her videos gets old quick. Most of the other horror type YouTubers I follow have already been mentioned, but I will third Bedtime Stories because I love their content.

Just remembered a guy I stumbled across recently: Blameitonjorge. His earlier videos seem to be shitty generic top 10s, but his more recent videos have been pretty good. His latest video is a mini-documentary on the Finders cult, where he gives a pretty neutral look into the whole Finders shitshow and the recently declassified FBI files.

FishStick is pretty good. His content isn't the most original, but it's nice to see someone break from the typical circlejerk around creepypastas/ARGs.

This thread is right up my alley. I love these horror topical/ horror narrative channels. I usually stick them on to fall asleep to. I will admit that I appreciate even the bad ones in the same way I appreciate bad horror movies as I hold the horror genre to less criticism than I would other movies genres. Let’s face it, this corner of YouTube, although entertaining, is mostly bullshit /x/ material. If you can accept that, they are much easier to enjoy.

My list of Horror Topical / Horror Narrative (alphabetical):

Atrocity Guide: One of my favorites, really well done and relaxing to watch. More of an oddity channel. My favorite video of hers so far is the one on Ulillillia, I really like this guy and am actually legitimately friends with him on Facebook.
Be Busta: Let’s not meet, paranormal Reddit reader. One of the older channels. Good atmosphere, non-obnoxious narration.
Bedtime Stories: Pretty good narration, falls some where in the middle of narrative/ topical. Decent production.
Beyond Creepy: Canadian guy, very naive and seems to really buy into it. Always has a segment in his videos where he gives his take on the topic after he finishes where he silhouettes himself in front of the sun in the forest behind his house. Hard not to like this goofball IMO.
Big Sky Mysteries: Montana-centric cryptids, hauntings, aliens ect. Very small channel.
Bob Gymlan: “Hi, I’m Bob Gymlan”. This guy has style. Great narration, great illustrations, production. Unfortunately Bigfoot-centric which I find to be topically the least believable content.
Chills: Lol Chills, everyone knows Chills, a living meme (the “Burger King Foot Lettuce”kid) with a forced/cringy cadence. His entire channel is bullshit and he knows it. Mista GG did a great video on him. Also does terrible rap songs on the side.
Criminally Listed: Pretty well known. More of a long form true crime documentary channel. Has an odd/obnoxious cadence to his voice like Chills.
Dark 5 / Dark Docs / Dark 5 Radio: One of my favorites, by far. Much more reality based creepy news, topics. Great narration, atmosphere and very little bullshit.
Hammerson Peters: Another really great channel. Author of a couple Canadian “Mystery History” books, Canadian cryptids ect. with some Oak Island BS thrown into the mix. One of my favorite videos of his features an incredibly gorgeous native girl doing the presentation. The comment section can’t stop pining over how attractive she is and they ain’t wrong:

IndexSe7en: Another high quality more reality based mysteries, oddities, bizarre and unexplained topics channel similar to Dark 5.
JCS - Criminal Psychology AKA Jim Can’t Swim: True crime, interrogation analysis. Very professional, extremely well done. One of the best channels on YouTube in my opinion.
Lazy Masquerade: One of the OG Reddit reader channels with a little bit less of the “Let’s not meet” drivel. He used to be a lot higher quality but I still appreciate his shtick.
Occult Demon Cassette: Amazing archival catalog of old VHS Oddities. Everything from old “Satanic Panic” stuff to “How to Play Slots” mail order garbage. Not really actual horror content despite the channels name unless you think that Dungeons & Dragons is “of the devil!”. Definitely worth checking out regardless.
Ozark Mountain Press: This is some real smooth brain stuff. Basically a really cultly new age publishing company ran by a batty old lady. Think Coast to Coast AM for hillbillies. For some reason I can smell dirty diapers when watching these people’s conferences and that constitutes it a horror channel in my book.
Rudolph the Tall White Alien: 100% Lolcow material here. Not really a horror channel, but fuck it. This guy thinks he’s an alien messiah and blogs endless conspiracy theories.

Committing post to save and I need a break. More coming in edit...

I watch pretty much all of these. Going to add

  1. Barely Sociable and his other channel Slightly Sociable. Does historical mysteries and online mysteries type stuff
  2. Lemmino. Used to do gaming top tens, but shifted to doing spoopy mysteries. I like the one he did on D B Cooper.
  3. Dark Histories. Unsolved crimes or strange events from history. Focuses on lesser-known cases.
  4. Dark Curiosities and Merc are both your basic 'unsolved mysteries' channel.
  5. Scare Theater. Your basic internet mysteries channel, and allergic to doing any of his own research, but has a fun presentation so I'll forgive him.
  6. Unexplained Mysteries. Absolutely any sort of internet rumor floating around the crazier parts of the web gets regurgitated. Still good for a giggle.
  7. Unresolved Podcast. Unsolved true crime with some leaning into conspiracies.
  8. Serial Killers Documentaries. Exactly what it says

Used to really enjoy Cayleigh Elise, but she nuked all of her content about a year or so back.

If urmaker hasn't been recommended, I'd also recommend his stuff. He posts full 911 calls relating to tragic accidents or criminal events with the context and aftermath of the calls. If there's any video to recommend of his, although not horror, is the one about his daughter who was sadly killed in an accident.

I love Urmaker, he’s further down on my list and I hadn’t got to him yet. Those 911 videos are extremely tense and legit make me queasy. I believe the video that did it for me was the one where a lady that had been kidnapped by a serial killer was trying to whisper her situation to the police while the kidnapper was sleeping only a few feet away. I wanted to strangle that dispatcher if I remember correctly.

Edit, here it is:

I used to like Nexpo a lot back in the day, but his recent videos have shat the bed pretty hard with how much over dramatization they've got. I really don't like the skits and IRL shit he does, it kinda breaks my suspension of disbelief, or rather my investment in the video by adding this cringy turkish soap opera drama shit.

Im not really that much of a fan of obvious ARGs or imaginary horror, so I prefer channels that stick to weird/creepy things that have actually happened, shit like missing person cases, random disappearances etc. Top Mysteries isn't as bad as the name would have you think, ShroudedHead is alright and I love ReignBot, I don't know why but her voice feels perfect for this type of narration content.

Though not exactly horror, I used to love listening to Dovahbruh. Not sure why but sad and melodramatic stories like the ones he read were always more fun to me than your average spoopy content. Mr Greentexts is pretty good too, and before getting shoah'd Creepswork was the shit.

That Chapter does a really good job of breaking down the cases without just rambling on.
out of all the names listed in this thread that i've looked into/enjoyed, that chapter is my favourite of the lot. he consistently puts out content that's well researched and presented, he's easy to listen to, and he's entertaining without the need to be extra or flashy with his videos in order to do so. absolutely recommend if you're into more true crime oriented stuff.

nexpo, on the other hand, has definitely been disappointing with his recent stuff. the last video that i genuinely loved was his one on worlds dot com, but everything since has just been...pretty bad. i still do like him though and call it dumb optimism, but i'm holding out hope that this is just a terrible weird, experimental streak and eventually he goes back to making videos more along the lines of his older ones.

Yeah night mind makes some pretty good videos especially his slender man ones but his ego and fanbase have gotten fucking obnoxious. Any time something happens with an ARG he has mentioned everyone is like "ZOMG!!!!! GET NIGHT MIND™ ON THIS!!!" and they treat his interpretations of things as indisputable.

As for his ego, I remember an ARG which nightmind and his fanboys got banned off of patron because they thought whoever was doing it wanted money despite the fact that he specifically said otherwise. Just shows that he has too much pride to think things through before posting on twitter.

Oh definately. In hindsight I should have clarified that I was referring moreso to his older content. I enjoyed his Marble Hornets and EverymanHybrid series where he simply went over the ARG and explained it to people who weren't there to watch it happen live. Same thing with his coverage of Wham City Comedy's stuff.

Unfortunately as of late he seems to have fallen into to the trap of getting high off his own ego. Alot of his newer content is just him explaining half of an ARG and then offering a half assed explanation before telling his viewers to "experience it themselves." As if I want to wade through 300 forum posts and dead links to read about an ARG that ended in 2011. The whole reason people watched his content was for an explanation of the ARG.

His older stuff is still some of my favorites when it comes to ARGs though. His videos on something like the Wyoming Incident are still some of my favorites. Maybe that's just because there is nobody else that fills the niche of making 2 and a half hour long documentaries about obscure ARGs.

Although as of late I have been fond of Atrocity Guide. I have been watching her stuff since she was around 14k subscribers and I'm happy to see her gain more relavance.

I used to watch a ton of Rob Dyke a while back. He used to do videos on serial killers and shit. Dont know what he's been up to lately. Last I heard he changed his name because it kept triggering the jewtube algorithm, lol.
Yup, he took his grandmother’s name, “Gavagan”.
I also found Nexpo’s last video cringy and unnecessary. Like ok, he’s being harassed, like sue her already? No need for a dramatic video with cringy melodramatic acts
