I'm certain you've all heard the following Nietzsche quote:
From what I've gleaned, most (western) occultists aim at blurring the boundaries between the consciousness and the subconscious (or super-conscious as some like to claim) with the ultimate goal of unifying both into one. If something goes wrong then dreamtime is especially vulnerable, since that is generally the moment where that boundary is naturally the thinnest. Any personal demons that you do not manage to conquer have free reign in there. And then there are other things that can fuck you up. E.G. creating a tulpa.
Occultism and alchemy generally have the warning that there is no stopping once begun. You either complete the great work/create the philosophers stone or you descend into madness. That is why most advice the right hand/dry path since it is the most regulated and while generally harder, it is more certain of success. The left hand/wet path is easier if there is anything "easy" in occultism but it is also easier to fail and fall into madness.
Modern biology and medicine has a wealth of knowledge on which you should depend for anything physical. The human psyche on the other hand is a far more mysterious and fragile thing.

I'm starting to see a pattern. It seems like any time you don't already have your shit in a bag you're mentally vulnerable in altered states of thinking. You don't even need "shit's magic" to observe it. It comes up with meditation and drugs, too.
I would be willing to guess that all the song and dance around right-hand stuff is meant to prevent this by getting people into the correct mindset.

These dumb tumblr "witches" don't realize that the kind of witchcraft that places like Uganda are concerned about aren't things like herbalists or people who attempt to predict the future. You see a lot of sob stories about shit like "This child was thought to be a witch so his tribe abandoned him" which paints the locals as superstitious morons, but it completely ignores the reality of what these people have to put up with when they have a "witch" in their midst.
In the case of shit like the "witch children" it's usually because a "priest" has chosen that child or the child "belongs" to that guy in some way. Yes it sucks to abandon a baby, but if taking the child in means that you and your family gets murdered in the night so your body parts can be turned into magic supplies then maybe, yeah, let the white Danish lady take care of the kid.
Other shit that you have to put up with with these Congo-area "witches":
- Grave robbing
- Pet murder
- Breaking and entering
- Ongoing trickery and ruses because the practitioners see everyone who isn't one of them as "cattle"
- Murder of your local albinos
- Cannibalism
- Baby theft
- Literal rotting piles of shit and detritus because part of their spiritual practice is training to become comfortable with death and decay
