Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Anyone else feel like their sanity's unraveling since this shit started? Just the mask mandate alone is enough to drive me nuts because facial expressions are crucial when deciphering someone's mood during discussion.
Fucking yes. I'm already a naturally soft-spoken mumbler of a person and having one on in a store when I need to flag down an employee for any reason becomes a pain-in-the-ass when they can't understand what I'm saying the first six or seven times I ask a question.

At least autistics aren't as bad off (lack of eye contact thing).

But yeah this muzzle shit needs to go.

As I said, I hate the elevated CO2, "mask breath", how many only cover their mouths and let their noses hang out, and how none of this bullshit was even a thing less than a year ago.

Also there's been far less to do IRL because of these endless "temporary" closures and "social distancing". It's like the whole world is forced to live as literal prisoners. But hey, at least there's "virtual" events!

2020 has made me very pessimistic and somewhat misanthropic. I hope the scumbags who forced this insanity on us are removed from power, but that may never happen in this crazy dystopia.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) may be getting impeached. From the Election thread.

Looks like Michigan Governor is being impeached.

Gateway Pundit said:
State Rep. Matt Maddock (R), who is well-known in Michigan as a pro-Trump solid conservative, announced tonight that he is filing the paperwork in the Michigan House to start impeachment proceedings against Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer! Whitmer has been repeatedly defying court orders limiting her COVID shutdown powers. And rumors swirl that another Whitmer Michigan shutdown is looming, perhaps starting on November 18 and lasting three weeks. A rumor that she would shut down the state on Friday came and went, though Whitmer held a very odd press conference where Whitmer and her advisors scolded family members not to hug on Thanksgiving.

Maddock told the Gateway Pundit: “Something had to be done. She’s ruining this great state. Small businesses and most dine-in restaurants will be dead by the end of the year. She’s caused the deaths of many vulnerable elderly people who died alone, scared, and pointlessly. This was long overdue,” Maddock said.

It's a long shot, but theoretically possible. The Republicans will need a simple majority in the House (which they control 58-51)* and 2/3rds in the Senate, which will require 4 Democrat senators turning on Whitmer.

*One Democrat representative died this year, and his seat won't be filled until January 1st, bringing the total to 58-52. (Each party flipped two seats; senators weren't up for re-election).

I have a vague idea that I mistakenly said earlier in this thread that impeachment would require 2/3rds in the state house as well, but that is apparently not the case. My apologies.

Matt Maddock said:
Myself and the following members: Daire Rendon, Beau LaFave, Ryan Berman, Shane Hernandez Dan Lauwers Lana Theis and a growing list of Legislators are calling forthwith for impeachment hearings for Governor Whitmer.
Michigan voters know she has committed the following impeachable conduct:
Ignored court orders.
Violated our Constitutional rights.
Completely ignored due process and the legislature.
Weaponized contract tracing databases to aid democrat campaigns.
Using our kids as political pawns and denied special needs students who depend on the services that occur during in-person classes. Caused the unnecessary death of thousands of our vulnerable elderly who died alone and scared in nursing homes.
I’ve listed the first things that come to my mind. What did I miss?

I think if Christmas is cancelled people are going to snap. Thats a religious and cultural institution.

"They" can say whatever the fuck they please, but Christmas won't be cancelled. Neither will New Year's.

Folks, let's get something straight. Since "they" won't bother obeying all the rules, edicts, and bullshit they try to force on us, neither should we waste a minute obeying such shit. This has been ALL political control after about 1 April 2020.

Americans can devise a countermeasure for any bullshit measure. Have your Christmas. Have your New Year's. Just be smart about how you go about it. Ignore what "they" say. Do as you please to the greatest extent possible. "They" don't give a fuck about you, only their political power. Actually, the only part of you "they" care about is your money. In the county I live in, the property tax bills went out on time, and "they" want that money, whether you can afford to pay it or not.

So fuck what "they" say, and fuck "them", fully.

I'm an empiricist. WHERE ARE THE BODIES
Other people on this board have said they know some people but the lack of bodies is giving me some serious pause.
Some local dumbasses on my neighborhood Nextdoor were complaining about people not wearing masks outside, and another made a post claiming to be an ER nurse and talking about how the hospitals are "overflowing".
Really? REALLY? Prove it. Show me something, anything! I'm practically begging for evidence at this point.
I've seen nothing, no hidden cameras in hospitals, no Pulitzer-winning photos, no 4chan gore threads, not even any damn TikToks. They said "Durr hurr we're protecting patient privacy." but it comes across as them trying to sell me a bridge.

Aaand the panic buying is back at the local store with toilet paper and paper towels. What exceptional BS started it now?
Anyone like single ply? If so, you're in luck! That's the only kind of toilet paper still in stock.
Glad I picked up a couple bulk packs of the good stuff while it was still in stock the past couple months. With all the rumors about the alleged fall wave and more lockdowns, I assumed people would lose their minds again.

I am so over this crap. My company keeps forcing us to do virtual events with no end in sight. They have figured out they can hold these events and save tons of money without all that pesky in-person stuff. I cannot take another year of this. The only light at the end of the tunnel is that I plan to move to a free state in a few months. One of the few things I can still control is where my tax money goes, and it will not be going to Tyrant Walz’s regime any longer than necessary.

My former volunteer work - no more because "temporarily" suspended because coronapanic - keeps sending me emails for "virtual events". "Virtual events" aren't too different from fictional events in vidya. Also I seem to lack the tech to do these crappy "virtual events" anyway, like "Zoom meetings".

Some call this "virtual event" crap the "Screen New Deal".

I hope everyone is fed up with coronapanic. It'd be worse if all were willing to accept this bullshit "New Normal" from now on.

I like how right before Thanksgiving that the recent corona explostion is being blamed on *checks notes* small indoor gatherings. Ignore that we started in-person learning in schools, you hanging out with your friends after work is the cause of all problems.
In Michigan, I can't help wondering how much of the increase comes from Whitmer's declaration that people didn't need masks to vote in person despite requiring them for any other trip away from home. It's been almost two weeks since Election Day; with an incubation period of 2-3 weeks, one can only wonder. It's a shame somebody hand-picks which questions get through for her to answer during her press conferences because I'd love to see a reporter with enough long-term credibility ask if she thinks that people voting without masks could have contributed to Michigan's reported upsurge. Granted, she'd do everything she could to not answer the question, but the question still deserves to be asked by someone she can't dismiss as asking it solely for political reasons.

TBF, many schools have been strict with their COVID protocols. Michigan has reportedly had fewer outbreaks/cases at K-8 schools surprisingly. That said, there's always the risk of an outbreak when kids from families not taking proper care of themselves catch COVID and come to school anyways or have it without symptoms and get allowed into school for their in-person/hybrid learning. That's probably the biggest concern.

Empirically, someone I know had a COVID test come back positive last week and apparently caught it because their employer is ignoring all the required protocols in the name of maximizing profits... at least until Wednesday anyways. I get that many requirements that state has imposed on businesses are unpopular and a pain in the ass to implement and do on a constant basis. Godbear knows how much I hate asking established clients the 3-4 screening questions I'm supposed to ask before allowing them into the office. However, knowingly putting the employees' and customers' collective health at risk is unacceptable in any situation.

I'm sure many people have put hardly any miles on their car because of interruptions to their work schedules, working from home, and the lack of any sort of leisure activities. While it might save wear and tear and maintenance expense on their cars, it's more than offset by the negative impact of social isolation.

I'm not pessimistic yet, but frustrated. It feels as if there's no end in sight to all the goalpost-moving, and it feels as if it will continue indefinitely until somebody somewhere eventually decides that people have had enough of the ongoing restrictions. I have the most feels for those whose financial situations will be in flux next year given the uncertainty of their jobs or livelihoods if COVID is deemed to still be a enough of a threat that requires continued restrictions through 2021.

Yes, it's theoretically possible, but I'm not sure any of the state senators will cross party lines to vote in favor of impeachment.

If Whitmer were to be impeached and subsequently removed from office, Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist would take over as governor. He's much more into SocJus and IdPol than Whitmer is, and he's been behind the push to address the alleged institutional racism that is deemed responsible for Michigan's minority community being disproportionately affected by COVID. "Be careful what you wish for," may be something worth heeding here.

Covid just took my mother. Somebody say something insulting to lighten my mood.
"Take my mom, please!"
Thank you. My previous thing wasn't a shitpost and I need some good old fashioned Kiwifarms insults so I don't break down right now.
(On a more serious note, please accept my condolences for your loss.)

The whole thing is fake and gay bro where have you been the last few months?

It's been a fantastic example as to why you never surrender any amount of freedom to your government, because you won't get it back. Sure, they keep saying that we're just about to reach the crest of the hill, it's just about over, we can get there if we just buckle down and try extra hard, but we're on day 245 of 15 days to slow the spread. That was eight months ago.

They say the lockdowns are just temporary, just a measure that we have to deal with for the moment until things "level out", but this country is full of things that were supposed to be temporary; things that we were only supposed to live with for a little while and then they'd get scrubbed off the books and we'd go back to business as usual. It's been a long time now, but do you know what other measures were "temporary" in the past?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were only meant to be active until we were "victorious in the war on terror." The Patriot Act was also supposed to be a temporary measure, but that wasn't going anywhere anytime soon, until Trump slapped it off the table back in May, to absolutely no fanfare. It's been about 20 years now and I can't help but notice that I still have to take off my shoes to get on an airplane, because some dude failed to blow his feet up in December of 2001. In France.

Sales Tax, which began in Wyoming as a temporary, emergency measure to help the state recover from the Great Depression. By 1933, eleven more states had imposed a sales tax, and then eighteen more, and then thirty, and by 1969 (Yes, that recently), every single state had imposed a sales tax, save for the N.O.M.A.D. states. (New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Delaware.)

Highway Tolls, which, in their modern form, began as recently as the 1950s and were a temporary measure to help fund the construction of the highway, after which all of the toll booths were meant to be removed, once the highway had been "paid off." This has only happened a single time in U.S. history. The Dallas-Fort Worth turnpike or I-30 was paid off in 1977 and the booths were removed. So far as I know, no other road in the country has done this before or since. It began as a construction fee, then it became a maintenance fee, and now it's just flat-out "give us money."

Income Tax, which began in 1861 and was only used to pay for the war efforts during the Civil War. The U.S. imposed and repealed income taxes several times throughout its history, exclusively for war efforts, until 1894, when Congress passed the Wilson-Gorman tariff, the first peace-time income tax in this country's history. It was repealed by the Supreme Court in 1895 after it was deemed unconstitutional, but thanks to Theodore Roosevelt's Sixth Message to Congress, we're now living underneath a permanent income tax.

You might think it's a little crazy that they could perpetuate COVID ad-infinitum, because surely at some point people would start to question a lockdown that's extended well beyond the reasonable duration for a novel virus, and you'd probably be right. That's when we start shutting down because there's too many carbon emissions in an area, because there's been an outbreak of the latest H1V1/COVID/SARS, because it's flu season and we want to "minimize the impact", there's been another riot in an area so we need to lock down. The circumstances would change, but the framework to enact it would already be built.

If you impose a "temporary measure" for long enough, the next generation won't even know it's temporary.
