youtube-dl DMCA'd by the RIAA - RIAA and MPAA are on a mass takedown spree

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
It's surprising that a venture backed by Microsoft, themselves heavily invested in DRM, would stand up for this particular project. So either the Github staff still has some independence, or they want to give a middle finger to Google/Youtube. Or some third motive I can't quite figure out.
Or they want to regain good PR for GitHub after their Critical Race Theory policies pissed off a lot of developers who use the service.

It is absolutely fucking obvious that youtube-dl has as its primary purposes completely noninfringing uses, such as we do here.
Yeah, pirates aren't downloading songs and movies that have been compressed to hell and back on Youtube, they're ripping original media or even smuggling the masters out from the studios.

Github's earned some points in my book, but let's not forget that they're still toxic. Is this the new devil's bargain? Suck the CoC, get legal protection?

This won't change anything for the average Joe just trying to keep a project together. I wouldn't even call this a win because it doesn't make GitHub any less opaque and there's no direct competitor for the price point (free). Whenever all these tech companies throw around PR-tested terms like "developer-first" it's to slide their bullshit down your throat while trying to make sure you don't taste it.

Good move overall. I particularly liked this part:
As we explained, the key claim in the youtube-dl takedown is circumvention. Although we did initially take the project down, we understand that just because code can be used to access copyrighted works doesn’t mean it can’t also be used to access works in non-infringing ways.

I wouldnt call myself an optimist, but this was a very clear case of reasonable fair use (or whatever the specific term is called) and therefore was always a winnable fight. The only real mistake they made was the unit test thing which was quickly fixed. IMO it was in github's interest to fight back on this, because if they dont, it sets a precedent that they can be pushed around. Youtube caved to these same copyright interests back in the day, and look at all the headaches its caused for them.

Did they really do this? lmfao

Look at the Open Source Software community watch thread for more info on the dumb stuff they've been up to lately.

The fact that we're celebrating this disturbs me. This kind of stance should be the norm, not the exception.
Really shows how Pro-User movements and actions made by a big corp or business is just downright rare these days, cause they usually don't give two shits if they crush people cause they almost always have the confidence they will make bank at the end of the day

Why does this tool gets to be taken down? while out there exist plenty of these tools for the same damn purpose?!?!?

asking again, does this tool allows anyone to download private videos? if that's the case i understand why it may got DMCA but if that ain't the case then ppl are just fucking abusing of the dmca system for clout

Because the RIAA is run by fags that squeal like little piglets at the mere thought of someone not paying for a 240p VEVO music video from 10 years ago. Which is ironic since the music industry pay their artists nothing.

There are like a dozen free git hosting services with similar features.
They need to be self-hosted or have the same Big Tech problems as GitHub. The average developer in 2020 can't be trusted with anything sharper than a crayon so you'd be lucky to find one that can operate Linux long enough to keep it running. GitHub is retard-friendly.
