During the pandemic, Girgis said she has been interested in how people living on the margins have been sustaining themselves “within and without the state.”
“By that I mean that in many ways, the government during this COVID-19 pandemic, has neglected so many Americans,” Girgis said. “Unfortunately its emblematic of things that have been happening in this country for a very long time. I’m really interested in seeing how, in the midst of such an acute crisis, so many folks have decided via mutual aid groups to help one another because they understand that the state will not be helping them.”
