I was at a gas station last night and CNN was on the TV.

I overheard Don Lemon in a segment making a case for not going to Thanksgiving dinner even if you have a negative COVID test, because you don't get the results until 3-5 days later and you can catch COVID in the time between getting the test and getting the result.

Oh...so COVID tests are just about completely worthless then to most normal people in most situations? Good to know.

The whole mask thing? I've never worn one, never will. What sort of proof do they ask for in the US if you say you're exempt for medical reasons? In the UK they can't ask and you're under no obligation to prove anything . What's it like elsewhere?

I know at the very least some airlines refuse to allow passengers on board their airplanes under any circumstances if they're not wearing a mask, and require masks to be worn throughout the flight. I'm not looking forward to my upcoming holiday travel because of that. As I described in a previous post though, the airports themselves don't seem to give a shit about masks. Not even the TSA goons at the security checkpoints or their office cared at all.

Otherwise I have never been confronted or admonished for not wearing a mask anywhere I've gone, or been denied entry or service because of it. I hear Costco is pretty stuffy about it, but they begrudgingly allow medical exceptions (they don't appear to demand proof). My vet politely asked me to keep a mask on while in the waiting room (to avoid "scaring" people), but didn't mind me taking it off in the exam room.

I've had a few trips to the hospital (bloodwork and scans; nothing serious -- you're stuck with me, Kiwis) in recent months and they were requiring face masks. Clearly they were prepared to deny entry to anyone not wearing a mask, but they had a supply of masks ready so they could furnish one for anyone who needed one instead of turning them away. They were also screening for Mandarin Malady symptoms and checking temperatures, and would refuse entry at all entrances to symptomatic people except for the Emergency department, which had its own protocol for symptomatic people in need of emergency care.

My family canceled Thanksgiving unfortunately, and unfortunately for the powers that be means I'm going snowboarding instead.

My Thanksgiving is very small this year since a few elderly relatives decided not to travel, but good on them. I'm glad they weighed both the risk and the hassle of driving and made a decision and I'm glad my family gave them that option and didn't give two shits about what the government and the unelected public health fascists thought of it instead of throwing a fit about how Thanksgiving is literally going to murder them, their friends, and fucking half their town or whatever.

What can we do to support these kids? I have some family friends/"adopted" nieces and nephews that I want to help.

See if any of the home school groups in the area(if any) are doing events similar to what your nieces and nephews are missing and see if they can join in. Home school groups can be small but in my experience pretty welcoming. The home school group for HS students in my area helped hold a prom for some of the public school kids. The event wasn't even 50 people (12 being the home school kids), the high schoolers were thankful that they got to have a prom.
