Anyone into gunpla - Japanophiles unite to share tips on painting our toys (GUNPLA IS FREEDOM)

Glad I happened to look up this thread before the Wing Ver. Ka comes in. This can be fun.

Then it's on to trains and the real autism takes hold.
lol I started with trains as a kid and eventually came to mecha model kits. I know guys into model tanks and that's pretty cool. Never got into Warhammer model painting though. I think mecha are just better overall, if only for the nifty fantasy that you're building your own robot.

Alright mate, you win
Here's some snapshots of the kitbash I've been working on for the past few weeks. Just got a basic airbrush set recently, so I'll be painting it up soon as well.
That doesn't look half bad! Always better to use Bandai kits for kitbashing rather than Kotobukiya. What kind of style are you going for with this one? It's got a bit of Gundam 00 if I'm seeing right.

has anyone built this? wondering if its worth the novelty. https://newtypehq.com/products/1-1-cup-noodle
>$25 for meme kit
Instead you can spend like 5 to 10 bucks on the Entry Grade RX-78 and have way more fun posing and detailing it. Seems like a waste.
Speaking of waste, does anyone else have trouble working up the nerve to commit special painting or detailing on their more expensive kits? I mean maybe it's just me but I'm always nervous I'm gonna end up burning $60-$70.

Well, its been a hot minute and I've built a few kits recently, I decided to build some LBX kits because they reminded me of Medabots (in design and basic logics). They went together very easy and it was relatively painless (the runners are grouped with pictures of the part being made and no nippers needed.) So here is a picture of them

Might get more, they are cheap

Not working on anything at the moment, but here’s the last kit I made, a 1/100 IBO Gundam Bael.

Come to think of it, I never quite got around to panel lining the rest of the kit. Maybe I should work on that next.

I didn't know Medabots had designs like those. Nice. Was the build fairly fun?

Gotta be honest I know nothing about IBO but just overall I like the look of this mecha over the Barbatos. Some more panel lining would definitely make it shine. You use gray on white, right? I ask because I've got a Kotobukiya kit that's vaguely IBO inspired but the "gray" is more brownish than white so it doesn't make the mechanical detailing pop as much.

Yeah, a sort of dark sea gray. I usually find dark brown works on any warm (or at least vaguely warm) colours — it’s what I used to panel line my Char’s Zaku II kit.

Working on the Sengoku Astray at the moment. I have the Nu Ver Ka on its way as well as some top coat. Going to get into painting this year can't wait for the autism to fully control me!

Going for a matte finish or more gloss?
Because the Sengoku Astray comes with a load of extra parts I am going to test both on the extras and see what I like more. Thinking it will probably be matte though. I like the look of the matte top coats and glossy seems like its much harder to pull off.

I used to have around 30 assembled models. But when I got into minimalism, I sold all of them to a local hobby store.
Now once in a while I check Gundam.info and this particular model makes me want to get back to assembling.

The build was super fun, relatively quick too (took an hour per kit). And I mention Medabots because they have a similar premise (basically LBX anime states that they are built and the robots battle in cardboard arenas) and the designs kinda remind me of Medabots, because you can combine parts from other kits for custom designs (like how Medabots you can take different pieces and customize the Medabots)

That does sound fun! Reminds me of Kotobukiya's Frame Arms but less autistic and probably way more solidly built. Bandai has a nifty alternative, too, called 30MM (30 minute missions) where you can buy multiple kits or accessories and swap them around to make cool designs of your own.
Model kits are great, but the more customizable they are the better. You really get that feeling of it being "yours".

Glossy just requires more coats to make it look better, if I recall. That and making sure it's all even coating.
I always liked pearl or matte better, too, though. It better fits what a giant robot should look like, I think. The minute we get too shiny it doesn't feel right.

By contrast, as much as I admire the level of dedication some builders go to for a realistic look, I can't fathom why so many people like painting their kit to look so rusty and dirty. Unless it's part of an overall diorama it just looks off to me. These kits costs about as much as vidya yet some choose to make them as hideous as possible, like someone stuck their Zaku down a drainpipe.
Alternatively "battle damage" is the tits and weathering + battle damage is almost always top tier if done properly.

i actually ended up ordering that entry grade to practice painting on recently as well
Nice! I got one myself and let me tell you, you won't regret it. The parts separation is so good you'll have a hard time finding places to flex your painting skills. Creativity is always gold, though.

Just built my first kit. Its fun and is basically an adult lego set, but I definitely see how people get really obsessed with the hobby. It’s gratifying building something, especially if your a white collar worker.

What kit? Always fun to see new people in the hobby!

Well I think it turned out ok. I am really excited to top coat it once it gets a bit warmer outside. It definitely felt like an older kit with all the extra pieces I had to nip off. I have the Nu ver ka and the MG Zeta 2.0 coming up, and the Zeta has me nervous since its a kit from 2005.

The RX-78-2 HG kit, it was only 10 bucks and i got a cheap one just to see if it was something i like. I quite enjoy it, so I definitely plan on getting another kit. Any recommendations?

If there's a mobile suit you like just buy it and build it! I try to limit myself to ones made in the last decade since they are generally higher quality. Remember the show is basically an ad for these kits so if you like any of the series suits you can probably find a kit.

What's the best method for anally pleasuring yourself with a Gunpla without breaking off or losing any bits inside? Asking for a friend.

Super glue my friend, it will keep those little 1/100 fists from disappearing in your rectum!
