Apropos of nothing 'Olivia' Hill is very proud of their work on Beast, and will still flame out whenever it gets brought up as being uncomfortably rapey.
Reading the start of the original 2017 thread that got locked, it's all quite reasonable for 11 pages then rapist BlackHat_Matt shows being an aggro douchebag defending a shitty rapey game
for some reason. I'm guessing that this is where things probably started to go wrong. Maybe people can calmly and reasonably discuss something if the primary instigator,
who was also protected by being a member of the RPG.net staff at the time, is no longer there? No, fuck that, don't warn anybody about how shitty this game is, shut everything down immediately!
And from reading the initial, calmer portion of the thread, it really does seem to have some serious problems as a game regardless of what you think of the premise, like the fact that each Beast can have its own feeding method and they can be quite involved, so you're splitting the GM's attention quite badly. Or the lore where most other supernaturals are inexplicably friendly to Beasts directly contradicts the Werewolf lore (apparently one of the two major factions should hate the shit out of these guys). Some of these problems seemingly came from late changes to the game to cater to oversensitive LGBT (the change from the Homecoming, where you realized that you were actually always a monster, to the Devouring where it was something that happens to you); there's some stuff that simply no longer makes sense with this change (like the reaction of the werewolf faction above). In-thread, people didn't know if it was a time problem, a budget problem, or what, but in retrospect it seems likely that egotistical douchebag Dave was too attached to his
precious writing to throw stuff out that no longer fit.
The original premise, though, which comes across as Dave's justification for being a creep ("I can't help it, I was born this way with the soul of a
Beast, and the people I prey on deserved it anyway")? Yeah, that's awful too, and it's also simultaneously really pathetic. When you have an RPG that's about being a unique mythical monster in the vein of Grendel or the Hydra or Medusa, people want to be a monster, not some weirdo who claims to have the "soul" of the beast (making him basically otherkin, who are incredibly lame). And then many of the acts that you can do to sate your bestial hunger are just incredibly lame petty shit, like the feminist sample character who verbally destroys comic book nerds who mansplain to her. Or you can be an asshole boss who makes his employees miserable, or a dickhead prosecuting attorney who loves to ruin peoples' lives, or a creepy burglar who makes his victims feel violated. And their society (which only really exists for metagame reasons) is cool and nonjudgmental no matter how pathetic or how evil the way that a given Beast feeds, just like a creep like David 'Olivia' Hill would want.
