And this is precisely why hardcore shippers should never be trusted as a source of general fan opinion or as critics of the writing. It won’t matter to them how well or poorly executed certain plot points are, or if the rest of the story is unsalvageable trash, just whether or not their side "wins." I guarantee you could take the exact plot points shippers either criticize or praise, switch out one of the characters, and their opinions would immediately flip depending on whether the changes fit with their OTP.

And god forbid a shipper manages to wriggle their way onto the creative team, or worse when the creator themselves was a shipper to begin with. So many okay shows have gone to utter shit because of the shift in focus to shipping fodder.

Hetalia: one of the characters is the personification of Nazi Germany. History is glossed over or treated like a joke. Japan's crimes are never addressed at all. That's all I remember.

Attack on Titan: I think it's something about the creator being racist against Koreans? Or something about the series being actually Nazism in disguise? I honestly forget.

I haven't been into AoT in ages but IIRC there was some backstory thing about a race of people being oppressed because they waged war as flesh eating giants in the past and tumblr/twitter people got upset cause they felt like those people resembled jews too much. Nothing major right now unless you count someone complaining that the contest giveaways are a joke, but in the past there were the Dawn Front issues, Nidhogg haters vs Stans(one was actually pretty recent involving an essay and a late answer), the shipping stuff, of course. SALT about Frost Rose/Nimbus which led to an attempted boycott, SALT coming from V0s, complaints about DST make-up, issues with a “Primitive Beauty” competition things, and complaints about Universal Tide being a “monstrosity” because it showed up so soon after another Hell Event.. Given the next Dawn Front, I can see yet another explosion coming up.

In Shining Nikki, there was a huge issue in the Korean server about a claim that the Hanbok(Korean item) was Chinese. It got so bad that the Korean server ended up shut down, AFAIK.

The Hetalia fandom was also pretty notorious for horny fujo cosplayers sexually assaulting people and in general being unable to behave themselves. As a longtime con weeb I can confirm that overall Hetalia cosplayers were to be avoided at all costs much like Homestucks (and yeah some fans/cosplayers from those series were perfectly nice, but enough had no idea how to act that it was best to just avoid them if you could).

Then there's the ultimate con horror story, the yaoi paddle.

All that said I feel like the big tumblr fandoms are probably just as bad as Hetalia and whatnot.
