General Discussion for Virtual Youtubers / Vtubers / Chuubas - it's okay to be a simp for 2D, just don't thirstpost.

How do people even go about promoting indie vtubers to start with? it seems like everyone pops up with a bunch of pre-debut hype and i still haven't found the secret to doing it unless they're already popular in some way or on another account.

Nowadays on twitter, people wait around to get noticed by that ratking Domo and keep hyping up their debut while not actually doing anything for a long ass time. As some people have pointed out here, that's poor practice, and can lead to an unsatisying debut that does not meet expectations.

Honestly if i were to generate pre-debut hype, i'd prepare everything first, and once i'm ready, set a debut date. Then, i'd release some "vtuber lore" leading up to d-day while interacting with some interested people here and there. Honestly, the only way i can think of as to organically promoting yourself is to use the proper hashtags like #ENVtuber for example. This is just me putting in my 2 cents though

I know graduation is inevitable, but it is sad to think about regardless. Like, within 5 years alone, who will have already left? When will Calli quit Hololive once she catches her big break as Demondice? When will Sora leave?
I didn't even think about Sora actually, kinda hard placing her in either "will graduate tomorrow" or "will graduate after the heat death of the universe"

I don't care much for either, as wrong as it feels to say that, but it does make me sad that A-chan would probably go with her if she were to graduate

If you want to find them just go directly to the Rat king and go down from there, btw the only thing i approve of Domo is that Lyger could not bully him he still has the Matsuri avatar, probably because the entire cabal dogpiled Lyger and told him to fuck off

I would think either sucking Domo's dick or being able to catch a few eyes by spamming r/virtualyoutubers or relevant hashtags

Sora seems to be a "goes down with the ship" type as, although she has lower viewership compared to the rest, she constantly seems to be enjoying streaming to an audience. Hololive will definitely feel different if she was to graduate.

Things seem to be pretty calm these days on the Holosphere, partly because they all preparing for the coming HoloFest.

So yesterday Mel streamed for the first time in 3 weeks, just your usual chill Minecraft stream. It got me thinking tho.. Mel's probably got other shit going on in her live and she's by far one with the least enthusiasm for streaming (just my hunch cuz she streams very little). On the famous Undoukai, Mel left on the middle of the stream probably due to work or other commitments.

My theory is she's ''Graduating'' after Holofest 2 or shortly after. Also, in 2021 I believe we'll have at least 1 or 2 more Graduations.

It's inevitable this will happen and it will make huge waves regardless of who it is because it hasn't happened before, none of the established holos has even shown serious intentions of quitting. Sure, some of them showed their doubts before, on being unsure if they're funny/endearing/good at ___/ etc. but never on stream has a Holo discussed the possibility of quitting altogether (or proof me if I'm wrong, I havent heard on any of that).

Just curious on how will these Graduations hit the community, as spergs take it for granted these chuubas will be there ''forever''. Cali for example: I think Hololive is but a mere stepping stone for her and the moment she gains momentum and a major record label contract she will quit. It seems she's enjoying it more than she thought she would, but she's obviously pursuing a music career first and foremost. The same could be said from Suichan but I don't know as much from her.
If you connect the dots Kiara might also be a ticking bomb.

In any case, we have no clue what's going on in the background and their private lives. There's multiple reasons I can think of for a sudden or planned graduation.

Who do y'all think will be the first JP/EN Holo to Graduate? (yeah i know about chris and aloe but disregard em)
I could be a schizo but I feel like at least one of the less popular/less frequent streamers could be on the cusp of graduation. Mainly Roboco or Mel. I would say Ayame but I feel like Ive been seeing her go live more and more recently.
For Holostars I also think Miyabi or Temma could - but thats just based on pure numbers. Sure their numbers are still much better than your average indie but they have to give up a portion of their income to cover. The reason I say its based purely on numbers is because they still stream fruently and seem decently motivated to try and keep growing. Temma in particular had a pretty legendary unarchived disney karaoke stream where Astel jumped in halfway through.

Man come on don't say that, we already lost 3 stars this year

There is also Kaoru from Holostars who was suddenly retired and didn't even get a retirement stream. The rumors involve some sort of sandal but everything was swept under the rug and he got memoryholed fast like Chris. IIRC he was their most popular Holostar back then, known for his Beyblade ASMR.

My money's actually on Matsuri graduating. She's started streaming without an avatar as Nozomi Something-or-Other and she's really grown more distant from the other girls, from what I've seen. It's pretty much public knowledge that she's got self-esteem issues and trouble with personal boundaries (which she's admitted on stream).

The first and second gens tend to lag a bit with the numbers and my money would be on Mel to retire before Aki, since Aki's new avatar may pump some new life and garner more attention. Hololive hasn't grown to the point of Nijisanji, but they are beginning to hit that peak saturation point for their own brand. The successful ones have all been able to quit their day jobs, for the most part, but the ones whose subs and superchats lag behind (like Mel or Aki) are going to get hit by the negative feedback cycle where if you can't stream enough, you can't get enough subs and superchats but because they don't get enough of those, they have to work other jobs, rinse, repeat, etc.

Actually, I see Coco being the first of Gen 4 to retire/graduate. I think it is a ways off but I get certain vibes that make me think it is inevitable.

tl;dr: Matsuri early-to-mid 2021. Mel sometime 2021. Coco sometime 2022.

Putting my bets on Luna, she always sounds like she's dying after talking for 10 seconds

To flip the question though which Holo do you think will last the longest? There I'm betting on the entirety of gen 3

I think Calli will stick around longer than you'd suspect if she gets a major deal. I think she genuinely enjoys it. However, yeah, it is a stepping-stone for her. Gura seems to have found the fresh start I think she was looking for when Senzawa's fanbase descended into a den of jackassery. They've followed her but I suspect the more jackasserific ones will grow bored after a while and leave. And I think Kiara will last a lot longer than people think.

I agree Gen 3 is going to stick around for a while. Probably all of Gamers, too. I don't think Luna will bounce but I think she'll slow down with all the physical stuff.

There was a post or two about Kaoru about a week ago. There are rumors but nothing confirmed and scuttlebutt around here says that his wife came out and said he didn't cheat on her (if I recall). It could just be that fujo fans or something found out he was married and his graduation was damage control before they threw a fit.

Didn't Matsuri recently do a collab stream with Nene, Kanata and Suisei though?

Well, i guess collab streams are not necessarily reflective of real life. But i do hope she's still close friends with Luna at least

1. Start 10-15 years ago. Back in the early days of Internet content creation people would watch anything , no matter how bad it was. DZK of YTMND made raps about wanting to fuck a 14 year old and people ate that shit up. Nyanners did her infamous Ponponpon shit that long ago as well. John Bain (RIP) started a podcast back in 2006 for World of Warcraft, probably earlier than that; he was around when that game launched.

2. If you missed the boat on being popular already, make or have popular friends. Your popular friends will give you a boost. I've been a fan of some smaller streamers and indie YT content creators for a very long time and made nice with other members of their communities (as well as the creators themselves) so I guess that gives me a bit of a leg up. The indie vtuber community is full of people who are willing to promote you to anyone they know, myself included. I found a few indies through discord friends and now regularly watch their stuff/talk to them in their own servers.

3. Accept you're never gonna make it big and just have fun with however far you do go, even if it's just a few people. Rome wasn't built in a day and the market is saturated right now. Indie vtubers are a dime a dozen and like regular Twitch streaming before them, most of them are fucking terrible. Even if you're talented there's a small chance of you actually making it big so might as well take what you can get, make some friends, have fun, and don't worry about chasing the big dream. It's not really defeatist, but more in line with to keep looking at the trees while in the forest. Nobody who's currently a big content creator thought that this is what they were gonna do to make a living 5 years prior. You think the Smosh guys thought they were gonna run a business when they first started doing shitty lipsync videos in a bedroom? Like, as fucking stupid as it sounds, you gotta remember you're in this to have fun. Even if you somehow bottle lightning and get picked up by hololive EN, never lose perspective on that aspect. You're still having fun with friends, it's just now more people are watching you do it.

The pre-debut promoters network to hell and back, usually through a popular friend like Domo (who seems to promote anyone so long as they're cute.) Why do you think we call his group a rat king? You either gotta have network backing or friends in high places but honestly it's just all about finding and interacting with the right people in the right communities.

Just don't reveal you're from the farms.

Yeah Gamers seem to be having a lot of fun streaming, I don't think Fubuki will graduate for the next century, the massive fallout after her graduation would be unimaginable.

By the way, is it weird to want to be a part of Hololive, not necessarily because of the clout and numbers but because you genuinely want to be friends with the girls (and guys) there?
