As a psychology nerd, I do personally think it's because most transmen are impacted in some way to be made more aware of their physical body and how others may view or perceive their body making them feel their physical sex is the only thing that makes them important.

I believe the inherent issue we have is that GRRM doesn't really understand how certain kinds of human being operate. I've read partsof his other fiction and it's not the best when it comes to characterization. And you're right, he completely falls apart when it comes to writing children.

I wouldn’t doubt that it has some connections, Pompeii mentioned girls becoming disillusioned with the concept that their sex is what’s important now, and usually that gets manifested as girls dressing ugly or messing with food intake to hide their sexuality, but I can definably see how becoming a gender-special could be a way of (poorly) coping with that (see my previous confession of asexuality for like, a year).
