Pornhub will prohibit uploads from unverified users, effective immediately, the company announced Tuesday.

The new policy is part of a slate of “trust and safety” measures that come after the site faced an onslaught of criticism in recent days over allegations of hosting abusive and illegal content.

“Our core values such as inclusivity, freedom of expression and privacy are only possible when our platform is trusted by our users," the company said in a statement announcing the changes. "Every online platform has the moral responsibility to join this fight, and it requires collective action and constant vigilance.”

The site will limit uploads to content partners and people in the Model Program, effective immediately. The company said it will create a new verification process next year to allow any user who goes through an identification process to upload content.

Pornhub will also ban downloads from the site, with the exception of paid content from the Model Program, whose users are verified. It will also expand moderation with a new team dedicated to auditing the site. It will release a report on moderation results next year, including details about child sexual abuse materials found on the platform.

The changes come after a scathing op-ed in the New York Times that detailed allegations of child abuse and sexual assault videos on the site.

MindGeek, Pornhub’s parent company, is based in Canada. The op-ed prompted concern from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, along with investigationsfrom Visa and Mastercard.

Pornhub and other streaming sites have faced criticism for years from both the public and members of the porn industryover policies that allow anyone to upload content with little oversight.

The renewed scrutiny comes amid a public debate over how and when tech platforms like Facebook should be held accountable for user-generated content on their sites.

At the same time, the criticism has been fueled by a growing moral panic over sex trafficking. A petition to shut down the site led by Laila Mickelwait, an anti–sex work activist, received nearly 2 million signatures this summer.

Major questions remain over the implementation and efficacy of Pornhub’s measures. The requirements to become a verified user are minimal, and reporting from Vice last year showed that “fingerprinting” software that the company uses to prevent content from being reposted once it has been removed can be easily circumvented.

Pornhub did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

whats a good extension?
youtube-dl will download videos from most sites, pornhub included.
Here's a portion of a script I use. It uses aria2 (to speed up downloads) and the cookie file for the site (if you want to download your private playlists, etc). You can grab the cookie with something like this cookies.txt extension.

Code:
#!/usr/bin/env bash

youtube-dl -i --console-title --cookies=/path/to/cookies/pornhub.txt --external-downloader aria2c --external-downloader-args '-j 12 -s 12 -x 12 -k 5M' $1
edit: you may need to change the aria2 switches to different values for different sites, those work fine for pornhub, but didn't work well for xhamster when I tried them in the past.
example:
Code:
script.sh https://www.pornhub.com/view_video.php?viewkey=ph5e36640c2d533

You may want to create a aria2 config file and use the latest user agent that matches your browser that you use on the site. I do this to keep things consistent, but it's probably not necessary. It looks like this for the latest ungoogled-chromium:

~/.aria2/aria.conf
Code:
user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/84.0.0.0 Safari/537.36"

Thank you

Wow, this is retarded.

I understand the need to verify peoples’ ages, but I use the Hub pretty frequently and have never come across anyone I could even misconstrue as being underage in a thumbnail or video. I’d say 0.0000001% of videos feature a 17 year old girl.

This “moral” decision is heavily outweighed by the negatives.

They're really stupid. Really, really stupid. There are a metric fuckton of streaming sites. Pornhub just got memed into popularity and now they're basically whimpering and crying. They're basically just going to become another onlyfans with amateur porn. Unless they did calculations and figured it doesn't matter anyway.

Yes this is totally being done because some twat at the NYT wrote an op-ed and not to protect the porn industry.

I believe you Pornhub.

The porn industry is just salty that their overly fake films with their equally fake performers are no longer popular and the market is showing a trend towards real looking people fucking.

Gone are the days of the muscley dumb arse pounding a silicone titted doll that screams and moans as soon as she sees a dick and inexplicably leaves her high heel shoes on while getting porked

It's pretty obvious they're invoking that as a cover for going after pirated content

Mastercard and Visa have withdrawn as a payment method to pornhub.

Verified or unverified accounts have just become a lot less relevant.

ETA. Oops Ninjad on the business thread

I'm honestly surprised Mastercard even dealt with them in the first place

Pornhub is a meme site anyways that ended up getting propelled into the mainstream during the post Gamergate era. Just like all of these type of sites, eventually they hit apex, and go the way of the dodo bird for something flashier to replace them. PH was going in the direction of being verification centric for a while considering that amateur stuff has mostly shifted over to OnlyFans. Like the degenerates they are, coomers go to other sites that have all the same content. I never understood why people pay for pornography anyways considering the internet is an ocean of porn anyways.

Pornhub just removed most of its videos

The site cracks down on user-uploaded videos

Pornhub is removing all videos uploaded to its site by unverified users, millions of videos in total, as part of a crackdown on user-uploaded content after two major payment processors suspended service. The decision, first reported by Motherboard, stems from a New York Times report that found the site was hosting videos of people who are underage and videos showing children being assaulted.
The site announced last Tuesday that it would begin limiting uploads to verified users only. Uploads now have to come from official content partners or members of Pornhub’s “Model Program,” which requires age verification to sign up. Motherboard reports that all previously uploaded videos are now being pulled “pending verification and review” beginning in 2021.
More than 10 million videos have been wiped out
“This means every piece of Pornhub content is from verified uploaders, a requirement that platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter have yet to institute,” Pornhub wrote in a blog post this morning. A spokesperson said the verification policy would apply to all sites owned by MindGeek, Pornhub’s parent company. The spokesperson didn’t respond to a follow-up about whether those other sites, which include YouPorn and Redtube, would also remove videos from unverified users.
Pornhub appears to have wiped out more than 10 million videos as of this writing. Motherboard said the site boasted 13.5 million videos on Sunday night; it has 2.9 million as of Monday morning. While the site hosts professional videos, its main function operates much like YouTube — allowing users to upload videos of their own and make money off of ad revenue. These videos represented the bulk of Pornhub’s content.
Following the Times’ report last week, Visa and Mastercard said they would investigate whether the site was hosting illegal content. On Thursday, both companies cut off service, preventing customers from making purchases on Pornhub through two of the most popular payment methods available. The suspension of service could pose a significant problem for Pornhub, which also sells videos, and for the sex workers who use the platform’s sales as a source of income.
Update December 14th, 10:59AM ET: Added a statement saying Pornhub’s policy will apply to other MindGeek-owned websites and updated the number of videos removed.

PSA: you can still download the videos using external tools like youtube-dl.
Just google/bing your favorite videos, copy the links to them and they still work for downloading. Hurry up, before they plug this hole too.
Most of them are already gone already. 10 million deleted is a fuckin LOT.
oh no... one porn site out of the bazillion others out there is going down the crapper. How will anyone ever survive this catastrophic crisis?
Weirdly, people sometimes used it to back shit up, I dont think this was about "piracy" though. Although I guess people can still do that on other sites.
