TLDR: 18yo pre-med student (daughter of jet ski racer) quarantined for two weeks upon arriving. Requests looser tracking bracelet, slips it off and goes to jet ski competition with jet skiing boyfriend.

Percentage of Japanese population over 65 is 28%. Percentage of US population over 65 is 16.5%. This is obviously important for COVID-19 death rates. Yet there's two magnitudes of difference between total deaths.

If this strain all the outlets posting fear porn about is legit and new, and can't be stopped by the vaccine, things are gonna get ugly real quick. I don't know how people even were convinced to be locked down for almost a year, but the longer you do it, the more likely someone is gonna snap and go after politicians. And if that happens, I'm sure the media will double down and the situation will get even worse.

The spikes are close enough to the ones coded for in vaccines to not cause too much of a problem on that front, if any at all. It apparently just infects cells much more easily.

Alright so you've made it clear that you prioritize your personal freedom less than being safe from the coof. Awesome, you're entitled to your opinion even if I think you and your ilk are a bunch of lemmings who would happily swallow whatever steaming shit the government craps out on them and ask for seconds. Go ahead and feel like a hero wearing your worthless cloth face mask, cowering indoors, and spending your days bickering with the anti-Science apostates online. That's not really a problem and doesn't affect me.

What is a problem is the fact that these disease control measures have completely wrecked our society in ways that will take years and years to repair, if they ever can be. Do you understand that? This isn't about any one innocuous tactic taken in isolation like bullshit masks, it's everything working in concert to transform the world into something ugly and oppressive. Small businesses being irreparably fucked along with an absolutely mind-boggling wealth transfer to Globohomo, Inc. (with much more of that to come). Social bonds being completely demolished, even between family members, out of fear and suspicion of sickness. Children being placed in isolation at critical stages in their development. American cultural traditions like getting together with family for Thanksgiving and Christmas being treated as evil by the COVID propagandists. State and local government officials wielding power cruelly and arbitrarily while living the high life themselves like corrupt nobles in the middle ages. The blatantly obvious vaccine mandate coming down the pipe at us. It's very clear that something sinister and profound is happening and there is every indication that it will continue to intensify and get worse.

These things are much worse for the world than COVID itself and you're going to suffer from their effects no matter how enthusiastically you cheerlead for them or denounce the naysayers. Do you honestly believe that there's going to be a point where the powers that be give the all-clear and this stuff just goes away? If so, what is that belief based on?

It just seems to spread faster. It’s been around a while and this is what viruses do. Human behaviour affects how viruses evolve, if it makes you very sick you exhibit sickness behaviour, stay home and see fewer potential hosts. The pressure is for milder symptoms and faster spread. Of course twice as many get it twice as many will be ill, but frankly everyone’s getting it anyway. The group in Edinburgh who modelled stop start lockdowns found more deaths.

If I can find the paper I’ll come back and post it but there was one at least speculating that Japan and surrounding countries have some kind of inbuilt partial immunity due to the number of diverse Coronaviruses they historically have been exposed to. Japan has done well - as have places that don’t have first world infrastructure like vietnam, and we should be looking at why. I suspect it’s multiple factors,

as for masks, it’s not that they don’t have a place - for closely packed areas they are probably of a small degree of use . I’d be up for recommending (not mandating) them on public transport for example. It’s the compulsory nature of it, the forcing in illogical situations and the symbolism of it that I just can’t get my head round. The masks rather than any other single measure other than house arrests have been what seems to elicit the most visceral responses from people. In most cultures covering the face is seen as unnatural and threatening.

...as should this graph, which uses ‘the scariest possible y axis I can click on.’ Again, this should tell you something about information control. This is coming from the CDC - they have NO excuse for not presenting data sensibly. It’s not quite as bad as the ‘deaths per million deaths in Sweden’ one (it’d take 11years to have a million deaths in Sweden, that metric has no business on any y axis.)
