That's exactly it, he used to be het and entirely comfortable as a man, and just liked playing dress up. The problem is, since his movie career took off, he's been surrounded by a bubble of Hollywood luvvies and had the trans bullshit fed to him as gospel truth, without any opportunity to hear alternatives. That media bubble is why most media personalities end up parroting the same script. The pressure to conform is immense.

I read his auto biography a few years ago and while he mostly sounded normal, there were a few weird red flags in it, which I didn't recognize as typical troonacy back then... For example, he creeped on a lesbian and thought she should be interested in him, he stole / wore his step mom's bras, he got upset that a couple of girls kicked him out of a women's bathroom which he used to get changed. He also claims he came out to his dad as "transgender" back then but I don't even think that word was used during that time (I cannot recall when exactly that happened, but all his famous stand-up is from the 90s, so it was way before that).
