almost 8 hour analysis of Omega Ruby and the almost 8 hour analysis of Morrowind.

And if documentaries are not your thing then you go down the other path in the evolutionary tree and arrive at
This nigga think he enlightened by watching videos about videogames on youtube
God damn, who does this? how bad does your autism have to be to do this? lol

I'm probably white knighting here, but I can't really understand the negativity. Current AVGN is decent, if not for the jokes then for being informative. Rental Reviews was pretty wholesome, a lot less critical than RLM and James shines when speaking about movies.

There is probably no going back to good old AVGN but the whole "genre" itself died out years ago after the shtick went old and I can't fault the guy for continuing the channel to put food on the table.

Rental Reviews was hit/miss for me and mostly miss. There was never a time where everyone seemed to be aware of the movie they were talking about, like at least one of them had watched it at 2x speed just before rushing on set and half-assing their "favorite" part, or even better, not having watched it for over a decade but still trying to talk about it on the fly in detail. Even James did this in at least one of them, though I don't remember which.

I want to know how these guys got jobs at Screenwave, what does that resume look like? They don't seem like they have much to offer, though Justin(?) made a great Violator (clown guy from Spawn) and I mean that.

He did briefly cover the Wii rhythm game Boogie a few years ago. There's a clip of it in the recent Christmas special compilation he released.
But that was for the old Christmas special parodying a Christmas Carol I think.

Last episode I enjoyed entertainment wise was Raid 2020 and even then I can’t watch the full thing because the ending joke was too long. Closest I’ve found to a “new” Nerd is Scott the Woz but he’s his own thing. Doesn’t help that James actually voiced the intro to his “bargain bin Christmas”

Disagree on Rental Reviews being good, but I do agree James is in his element when talking about movies.

If he wants to keep the channel going as his main source of income, retool it to talk about movies. He'll still draw an audience, most people enjoy his film knowledge over his AVGN act these days it seems. There's a wealth of content to talk about, just in classic horror movies alone which seem to be his passion. I'd certainly be interested in that. Toss out an occasional AVGN vid every few months to appease the autists who can't let go and go from there.

"Quality over quantity. That's our lesson here." - AVGN, Action 52 review

I rather have 1-3 high quality AVGN videos every year than having 12 AVGN episodes every year and most of these 12 are mediocre and at most one of them is a hidden gem but still not too high quality.

say what you want with Screenwave fucking up AVGN, but they fucking know their SEO really good. I already pushed Youtube to not recommend me the Cinemassacre channel and all other associated channels but it always comes back somewhere in my auto playlist in a day or 2.
Keep doing that, it will eventually stop recommending the channel, worked for me but took a few weeks.

Same. JonTron isn't that funny anymore either, I think they all just got really annoying and political or decided to play it way too safe. They're just corporate douchebags now, but some just show off their true colors.

It might just also be growing up, realizing these assholes all sound the same, and are just boring to watch after a while.

I remember reading a few old articles he made which were funny. I think it was the Superheroes thing before capeshit took off.

Remember when "lmao get a real job, this youtube shit won't last forever" was a real common mantra in the early days, when content creators were either just fucking around in their free time or trying to make it a real job? We're at an awkward point in time where those same content creators did make it into a real job, but now they've gotta keep doing the same kinda shit they got famous for, for the rest of their lives, or else their channel dies and they lose it all. It puts a lot of otherwise good creators in awkward positions where they're constantly fighting against burnout, and stuck doing things they lost passion for ages ago.

Something I've thought about is how the AVGN could do a sort of sequel series where he's an old man, and his older kid shows him how to play newer games, and he gets upset and confused by them. It'd be a great way to continue the show in an age-appropriate way, and he'd get to boomer out and get angry over modern games and their many modern problems that just weren't there on 20th century platforms. There's a lot he could do with that format:

  • Running gags where he can't cuss around his kids until they're older, so when he gets furious he has to contrive a reason to either leave or send them out of the room so he can throw a fit.
  • Noticing that some modern games are just carbon copies of old ones that they just straight up got away with
  • Gags where he tries to review games that are completely unplayable now due to server shutdowns or whatever, like if he bought a disc copy of Lawbreakers or Battleborn because he heard those games were shit, only to find that even the single player content is locked out and the disc can't be played

Scott did a Nintendo Championship video with nerd awhile back. Didn't watch the full thing but it was neat

Not really a lot of new info. If you read between the lines, it seems like people are correct that James got burnt out after AVGN The Movie and never recovered. He also got overly freaked out over COVID and that fucked up the whole work year for everyone.
Probably lead to even more hair loss. Directing a movie is fucking insanely stressful and if it doesn't come out the way you intended then that would definitely fuck with your drive to keep going.

Edit: I didn't realize Justin Silverman jumped on the Cinemassacre Truth reddit for an AMA. That takes balls.
