At least Screenwave can prop him up for at least a decade or two.
I give it five more years, tops.
James has established a wonderful legacy for online media. When it comes to YouTube, James can easily be described as one of the forefathers of modern content creation; alongside the likes of Neil Cicierega and Weebls Stuff. He set a trend with "angry" reviewers and many of his visual quirks are still replicated today either in the reviewing space or livestreams. That all said,
WE know this because most of us in this thread grew up with his videos in some capacity. However it's 2021 and the general range of content being offered by AVGN (via ScreenWave) just isn't appealing nor engaging to modern demographics or audiences. We can blame it on Mike, Justin, ScreenWave etc. sure, but I doubt things would be any better if James was still solo.
Media's "life expectancy" online is fickle. Meme's for example, can transcend time (Pepe / Doge) or burn out within mere days (BongoCat / White Vans) and this can also be applied to content creators too. Some of them aspire to be more than an "e-personality" and indirectly self-sabotage the empire they built. Annoying Orange and Ray William Johnson with Equals Three come to mind. Whereas others continue to wallow deep and inward, unable to accept the irrelevance they face due to poor choices and false promises like Spoony or Boogie. Despite the repeated rise and fall of names surrounding him in the platform, James has done a lot to withstand the ever changing tides of online media. Ultimately there is one thing you cannot defy forever James. Time.
James is getting on with age. That's just obvious. However unlike Doug Walker, Mega 64 or even the creators who'd go to mimic him like Angry Joe, the creators who where active during his notoriety; what's amazing is that they all still enjoy making content. James on the other hand, he has cast himself into a role that doesn't actively facilitate his passion. James isn't by all accounts a "Gamer" on the same level as Mike. He is a film buff first and foremost. James isn't tech savvy either. His inability to adapt or adopt todays practises can be traced back to his old commentary tracks, in which he mentioned using a VHS to record gameplay back in 2015. As we move further forward in time, what kids consider "retro" will become too complicated even for James to handle. (For context, the 360 is already 15 years)
It's only going to get worse from here.
