Everyone keeps comparing it to the lobotomy fad, but I get the sinking feeling it won't be as nice and neat as all that. There won't be some grand social recognition where our children or grandchildren look back and think "My God, what were they thinking?"
It'll be more like the aggressive fostering programs in the 1920's, where children of poor families where forcibly rehomed despite nothing being wrong with the family itself because what a caring society does is steal children from loving homes and put them in richer ones; it'll get phased out by one or two court cases that, while landmark, are unknown outside of certain professional circles, the main proponents will all slowly die off or be unofficially shunned, and the whole sorry mess gets swept under the rug because no one has the guts to remember. In 50 or 100 years, the troon fad will be unknown outside of medical historians or devoted scholars of early-21st century social causes.
