There's also the fact that virtually nobody on either side, even among the more hardcore antifa criminals, is willing or prepared to actually start shooting at police. That's an almost guaranteed death sentence and a major escalation, not to mention radioactive to any political cause apart from something like fundamentalist Islamic terrorism.
Open carry demonstrations are essentially just ritualistic displays of strength, not really something intended to turn into an actual use of force. For that reason I personally find them to ring hollow and impotent. It doesn't strike me as particularly intimidating to have a large crowd of people unwilling to set one foot outside the bounds of the law wave around guns that everyone knows they will never use. Not to mention that disorganized mobs of armed people who largely don't know each other with no training in coordinated tactics are more of a danger to themselves than some external enemy. The most that that kind of thing accomplishes is creating a dangerous situation that can be exploited by provocateurs.
