I'm going to go ahead and guess that his soon to be ex-wife made it a condition of an amicable divorce that he files for bankruptcy before they divorce in order to discharge his likely substantial credit card debt. It's absurdly common for these men to immediately, upon declaring themselves trans, go crazy getting credit cards and maxing them out on "transition-related necessities" like cosmetic surgery, hormones, clothing, and makeup that they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. If he didn't discharge the debt through bankruptcy prior to the divorce, she may (depending on local laws) be legally responsible for at least half of it. So I'm betting she twisted his arm somehow to get him to do it.

(Either that, or he's trying to screw her over by declaring bankruptcy during the divorce in order to bolster a claim that he has no assets and no means to pay, for example, child support. But I doubt it would work. If he had a completed bankruptcy - ie he has gone to a court and shown that he has substantial debt and cannot reasonably be expected to pay it - it might help him, but a pending bankruptcy proves nothing except that you've got a few thousand dollars to throw at trying for bankruptcy. Shit's expensive.)

It's actually frighteningly simple when you realize what they're trying to do.

These AGP creeps know they aren't women and know they will never be women. They won't even pass: they lost the genetic lottery and there's not enough makeup in the universe to soften these man-jaws. So they don't even try to be women. They either claim to be somewhere in the middle, leaning towards women (non-binary), so they can explain their non-female appearance (and their dicks) away; or they try to redefine the meaning of "woman" by claiming to be transwomen.

Either way, they don't have to try. They can just say they're women and screech at anyone who says otherwise. As a bonus, they have a nice persecution narrative good and ready for them, because anyone who disagrees with them is an oppressor and a transphobe that they can milk for asspats.
