Schopenhauer was very pro-suicide. He just thought that denying one's own will to live and basically fading away into nothingness was the better way to go, for some reason.

Which isn't quite suicide being optimal or actually fixing the "problem," such as it is. If the problem is having been born at all (the idea of Cioran), suicide doesn't fix it. There's no particular reason to do it if it just harms others without even fixing what is ultimately unfixable. Essentially, suicide is pointless and causes more harm than continuing to live.

I'll also note Schopenhauer lived to the age of 72 although he looked 92 when he died and the most miserable 92 year old son of a bitch of all time. I think he actually enjoyed making other people miserable too much ever to kill himself.

I'm not sure "they" think that way. That's kind of what Schopenhauer did when he was confronted on the "well why don't you just kill yourself then" thing. I doubt redditeurs have gone into it that deeply. I know if I had a choice between being a redditor and killing myself, I'm loading explosive shotgun rounds.

Well, like theodicy, the problem of evil, this is the obvious Achilles heel of the whole antinatalism thing. To the extent it isn't some nearly religious belief in the worthlessness of existence, it's an offshoot of utilitarianism, where the original precept is that existence itself is worthless and, more importantly, of negative value.

If you just go out and ask a million or so people whether they view their existence as being of negative value, I'm pretty sure the vast majority will look at you like you're nuts. Because you actually are nuts if you do that. So in the vast majority of cases, if you are about to jizz in some slut and knock her up, the resultant offspring will be okay with that result.

The tiny minority will grow up to be Schopenhauer. While this is a tragedy, it is not a good reason not to jizz in that slut.

I think my mistake, and it isn't the first time I've made it, is encountering the rebbit version of something and trying to defend the actual version of it as it exists in legitimate philosophy. Because almost all rebbit philosophy is REEEEEEE FUCK YOU DAD.

And there's other antinatalist novelists I've read - Ann Sterzinger comes to mind in particular - whose worldview is really obviously entirely shaped by the fact that they're just an untreatable depressive. Imagine constantly looking at the world with the kind of awful, sinking cynicism you get when you're in your deepest blue funk. It's honestly a little heartwarming that some of them have any empathy for others left at all.

But those are the thoughtful, creative ones. Your average reddit antinatalist is just looking for a profound-seeming justification for the life of shallow hedonism they were already living.
