The internet is weird like that. It seems like people who have kids as their target market can just blow up through the algorithm overnight, or over a little while if they do well. Just look at PewDiePie's rise to dominance.

Dude's been intentionally gaming the algorithm. Once he got the Pewdiepie seed, he got a massive influx of viewers. Instead of letting the views dry up, he kept up the momentum. His username is already prime for a youtuber, since it's short, distinctive, and easy to remember; he started the trend of showing your youtube statistics to demonstrate how many viewers are subscribers, which helped him get even more subscribers; and he keeps himself from cursing or doing anything that would get the censorship-heavy algorithm to suppress him.

Am I missing something, or is this complete hyperbole? I don't deny that his videos and streams get high views, I see that a video on his main channel has gotten 22M views in a week. A quick search for DreamSMP/Dream SMP and I can't really find much above 10M views. Maybe I'm autistic and misunderstanding how installments of his Minecraft media empire are distributed, but I don't really think his numbers are any more radical than what you'd find from any content farm.
I don't necessarily think that his subscriber count is because of bots, but I also think that it's odd that so many people see this dweeb as being some galaxy brain 5000 IQ genius. He's gotten lucky with the algorithm, and he's produced content that can be mindlessly consumed by both mentally ill, yaoi shlicking teenagers and drooling toddlers on iPads. I guess you can call it "genius" that he's encouraged the aforementioned teenagers to act like retards on social media, ensuring that he has some persistent modicum of revelancy in Internet culture as a whole. But I have a feeling that that's going to backfire. There's a reason why other content creators don't enable that shit. I see him as the 5 Minute Crafts of Minecrafter YouTube. More of an idiot savant than a genius.

He is partnered with some of the largest Minecraft content channels and they all constantly advertise each other, either overtly or casually. They collaborate on storylines for their SMP server and livestream it, routinely shooting right to the top of the Trending tab for gaming. Technoblade did a stream just a few hours ago that was at #2, and I think it hit #1 for a while. TommyInit streams regularly as well. Together they have 10 million subscribers and Dream is part of nearly every important stream they do. Then there are about a dozen other content creators with about a million or more subs each that stream on his server. By just being the host he essentially gets his name broadcast as the host and organizer of content enjoyed by about 20-30 million people every week, split up among various personalities that everyone wants to see working together.
For some perspective, Technoblade has a 'sell-out timer' on each stream, and when it rings he spends about five minutes telling people to sub or become a channel member. It's gained him over a million subscribers in a matter of days, and every time he does it, he gains thousands of dollars worth of new channel members and thousands more dollars worth of donations. That's revenue on top of what he already makes by default, and he isn't even the biggest guy on the SMP.

There are many videos out there explaining the Youtube algorithm and also it's easy to find out what's currently trending. No wonder he blew up like he did, anyone could have.

I actually think Dream's content has been pretty good. He has zero personality but he makes up for it with good video and gameplay ideas. His manhunt series is genuinely gripping once you suspend your disbelief and ignore how blatantly scripted the whole thing is. I think I'd even respect the hustle if he didn't spend his time trying to convince people that it's all genuine. Unfortunately, he let the fake 'minecraft-god' act he puts on get to his head and believed he could fool the leaderboards the way he fools his fanbase of autistic children. Such a waste of potential.

I disagree. He can make good content. I enjoy his Manhunt series a great deal, and he's inspired hundreds of legitimate artists and animators to make material based on his accomplishments. If none of this had come out at all I'd still be perfectly content watching what he produces on a regular basis. You simply can't blame the algorithm for his successes. It's like saying Chanel wasn't a great clothing designer because she was also a hardcore Nazi, or that Elvis wasn't a great singer because be was also morbidly obese with no self-control.

I'm going to be a bit contrarian here. Dream's content in the context of Minecraft is actually both unique at the time and also entertaining. The Death Swap and modding the game in various dumb ways to try and complete it with his faggot friends was refreshing, it wasn't just another "let's play" type of boring crap. There's only one good channel that does "let's play", and it's Ethoslab. The rest are either boring or just suck.
Dream also made a name out of himself with that maximum jumping distance video, that was his first truly viral video I suppose.
I'm not sure about that PewDiePie seed thing. Did he get the same seed "randomly" and went viral? The chances of one getting two same seeds in one go is 1/(2^48 ), it's actually not that low if someone just does nothing but create a new world for 12 hours a day, I'm guessing maximum 1 year, the person will have 2 same seeds. This is similar to the "Birthday paradox", once you consider how many people are playing. Was Dream "lucky" and got the same seed as PewDiePie? It's not hard to fake, but by chance it's not that low.
His manhunt stuff is really fun. Is it scripted? Well, I'll be a bit contrarian again. I think there's a pretty general framework to it, but at large I think it's genuine. He uploaded the full footage of his previous VS 4 hunters video where he assraped his gay friends with a punch 2 bow. I think they do have a large framework to follow, we know there's rules such as Nether travelling and Portal trapping isn't allowed. The most recent one, he didn't even make it to a stronghold, got fucked by a dumb splash potion. That was lame. Definitely not scripted.
If anyone can just gain the algorithm and ride it, we'd be seeing far more vapid cunts with 10 million subscribers and be able to buy a nice house. The guy does have talent, he's also not a communist troon, too bad he's a cheating faggot and can't just concede. He will just become more and more popular, his infidelity and cheating niggery will just be a tiny footnote, but I probably won't be watching any of his new videos. If he conceded, none of this would have blown up.

This artificially enlarges his reach since people will think "oh shit look at these 4 other queers in his videos, each with over 2 million subscribers!" The full shit circle gains them more clout because YouTube will recommend their channels and in the description, or in the video, what do we have? Other channels ran by his faggot associates. This kind of shit applies everywhere. Luxury brands such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton will do collabs with punkass shitty youth brands such as "supreme" and "Tommy Hilfiger", it's all just a giant grift. People unaware of this incestry will be confused, why would a high end brand associate with some trash kid's brand?

A man who speedruns fame speedruns his entire career. The stans will get bored in about a year or so and move elsewhere, to where I'm unsure, but the burn-out will start setting in at some point. Of course, I'm not saying that the die-hards won't stick around, I'm just saying the run-of-the-mill ones will find some other fandom to flock to. I don't think he'll completely die out though, he'll probably still average a decent amount of views, but a lot of potential long-term viewers avoid his content simply because of the reputation he's gotten himself.
I might be completely wrong though, I'm no algorithm master.
