imho the point of the impeachment is to bar him from office in the future.

Now an interesting situation happened in the impeachment of Collor in Brazil maybe 20-30 years ago, he resigned a few hours before the vote but they quickly decided to vote anyway so he would be barred from office even if the impeachment vote happened after the resignation.

At the time, they decided that by resigning, the voided the "main" penalty (removed from office) but still could be judged in order to decide the "accessory" penalty (ineligibility).

That was an interesting case and I wonder what would happen in the US. After that, the Constitution of Brazil was changed to include something expressly providing for this possibility.

You just summed up the last four years. You can call it as it is all you want but nothing is going to change unless you do something or separate yourself. Conservatives and Trump had plenty of time to change how the internet worked. But they rested on their laurels for two years when they controlled congress and only tried to do something when their new consecutive rise was already falling apart. There was nothing they could do after losing the house.

I pretty much just had this sort of conversation with my brother last night/this morning.

Conservatives knew by 2016 that Big Tech/the media was out to get them and their supporters, and yet by and large Republican Senators such as Cruz, Lee, Graham, and Hawley essentially waited till the last moment prior to November 2020 to harangue Dorsey and Zuckerberg (Note : I believe there was at least 1 or 2 hearings with these two but it didn't even amount to a soundbite). Republicans/conservatives aren't just politically stupid, they are grossly lazy and they're going to pay dearly this time around.
