Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

This is why despite null's orders, waifus are becoming such a big hit and not just with weebs.
Is strange for some reason (or at least the last time i check it out in /co/, like 2 years ago) are ATLA & TLOK wahmen one of the few pieces of western animation that can enter in the "waifu" weeb thing.

Agreed, but She-Ra still sucks.

Even the original She-Ra from the 80's was terrible.

Of course, She-Ra sucks mainly due to it being a pretentious boring show more than anything else. But that's just my personal opinion so feel free to disagree with it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go rewatch The Sopranos and then I'm going to watch some episodes of the greatest cartoon of all time, I tell you hwat....

Yeah I admit the og she ra was more less mattel and filmation trying to put he man on life support while also trying to get a slice of the girl's toy market classic mlp and jem was raking in. But at least she ra was drawn by people who at least understood the female form...even if they weren't interested in it (if the stories about the animators at filmation are to be believed know what I mean?)

Sure, Erika Scheimer's a lesbian, but most of the people who worked at Filmation, AFAIK, probably weren't gay. A lot of them really didn't like working there. Would you if you had to write scripts around pre-animated poses?

The one thing that Filmation really had in its favor was their commitment to never outsourcing. Lou Scheimer walked the picket line with the animation union when they went on strike to protest it in 1982. That meant that he was picketing his own studio for something he didn't do, but the gesture was what mattered.

Honestly the new She Ra was a step up from the old one.

Actually, a ton of people who worked at Filmation were LGBT. They were one of the only studios in the West that had completely undisciminatory hiring practices, which was pretty revolutionary considering She-Ra and He-man were being made at the height of the AIDS crisis, when most people were terrified to even touch a gay person lest they somehow get AIDS from them, let alone hire them.

It ended up being a place that a lot of LGBT people in the industry could flock to for work since they knew they wouldn't immediately get shot down and turned away for being openly gay. Pretty awesome, not gonna lie.

Unrelated, but there's a story that Lou Scheimer's dad had to leave Germany in the twenties because he punched out Hitler.

You wanna talk about awesome...

In my personal opinion, both versions equally sucked.

But I never cared for 80's cartoons or reboots thereof in general.
80s cartoons in general suck. Reboots thereof will always be a step up.
True, though it kind of faded from memory pretty fast. I guess that's what happens with a new version of an established franchise whereas stuff like Gravity Falls and SU have stayed in people's minds even well after they ended.
I’d say it’s on the same level as GF and SU. I still see people talking about it compared to the old cartoon which is completely forgotten.

Most of them are really alright but you have to take them with knowledge of the times they were made in - times that were vital to the flowering of TV animation in the 90s, incidentally, but that's another story.

I guess I'm just not looking in the right places then. Or rather, the people on my tumblr feed have stopped talking about it.

I still see plenty of talk saying how amazing it was and how it was better than the 80s version in every single angle. 2010s animation seems to be a Renaissance.

In other news, a sneak peak of Kamp Koral was posted.

2010s animation is still largely building off what was developed in the 90s. I wouldn't call it a renaissance so much as a very fertile period.

Don't even bother replying to this gimmicky faggot. All they do is "haha me so contrarian! Look at me posting baity posts, gib me neg stickers XDD"
It was funny at first but they are getting more predictable and unfunny as time goes on.
Honestly I can't make up my mind if that guy is genuine or not but the way they post is making me feel like they're just shitposting for neg rates.

Definitely wouldn't go that far, but on a base level it's much better than people give it credit for. Like any other decade it has its stinkers and its winners.
People really do underestimate what this decade brought. It’s a real shame.

I feel the 90s are very overrated when it comes to animation. It had some good stuff but it wasn’t the Renaissance people make it out to be.

It absolutely was a renaissance - of sorts. It was, after all, the decade that brought us creator-driven animation. Before the first three Nicktoons you didn't really have animated shows that were created by specific people, tied to one person's specific vision. And now those are the vast majority of animated shows.

There were also so many places you could find new animation that it was an exceptionally fertile period. There were more outlets to find animation, period, in 1995 than there had been before or since.

I just never saw the appeal of older shows and feel more modern shows do what 90s cartoons were trying to do but better.

agreed with you all the way bill, while @Syaoran Li and @Private Pyle are entitled to their opinions and i understand why they'd have them. I feel that while 80's cartoons are flawed and not as good as people who grew up with them say they are, but you gotta understand the limitations and rules that writers were constrained by the time. As paul dini said, he had a lot of ideas for the dungeons and dragons cartoon and some of them would have been amazing, but the network and standards of the time killed off most of them and the final product is a watered down version of what he wanted.

By the 90s things were really reaching new heights. nick and CN gave rise to creator driven animation, we got the first CGI animated shows and movies (reboot and toy story) Disney was at a level of success not seen since Walt was alive, hell even living legends like hanna barbera got back into the swing of things, being producers and occasional writers for the what a cartoon show, and there was a new found appreciation for others like chuck jones, tex avery, and bob clampet. Thanks to being featured on blocks about them on cartoon network
