Junji Ito is one of the mangaka to follow imo because of how batshit insane and weird his stories are. There's a mechanized shark, snail people, robots that turn people into fart-bags and then run off the fart gas, people yelling to create tornadoes that they can then ride, a planet that eats other planets. This dude does it all.

I think that Amigara Fault is actually a perfect metaphor for the horrors of troondom and lolcowery. The story's horror is based on the psychological aspect of compulsion. As the holes are "made for them", the people feel the irresistible need to enter, despite knowing that it will result in agony and death. There's something inherent within them that causes a deep urge to destroy their own self. Being lured into entering an extra-special, just-for-you, fetishtisic gender, then emerging with a destroyed dick, a lumpy, painful body, and no job, is quite similar to what Ito's characters go through.
And in the story, the holes are created in such a way that once you enter, the only way to go is forward. Chilling stuff.
