Oregon police are looking for a man who they say stole a car with a child in the backseat only to return the 4-year-old and reprimand the mom about her parenting.

The carjacking took place outside of a grocery store in Beaverton, Oregon on Saturday when the mom left the car running with the child in the backseat, local authorities said.

The mother left the car unlocked and went inside to buy a gallon of milk and some meat, acorrding to the Oregonian.

The thief happened to walk by and hopped in the car, the New York Post reported.

He soon realized the 4-year-old was in the backseat and U-turned in the parking lot, returning the child to the mother - but not without scolding her, according to Beaverton police.

"He actually lectured the mother for leaving the child in the car and threatened to call the police on her," Beaverton police spokesman Officer Matt Henderson told the Oregonian.

The thief ordered the mom to take the child before driving off in the stolen car.

"Obviously, we're thankful he brought the little one back and had the decency to do that," Henderson said.

My question is why didn't he remove the child from the backseat before he drove off? It's kinda like that dude who assulted a pregnant woman for smoking while pregnant. Something just doesn't add up.

Yet he STILL stole the car. :story:

Y'all are acting like leaving a 4 year old unattended for a few minutes in a car seat is a death sentence. Helicopter parenting is real.
It really depends on how hot it is and what neighborhood you're in. I mean, I wouldn't leave my 4-year old in a place where, apparently, car thieves frequently strike.

Carjacking, in my mind, is something that involves force and threat of violence. This crazy asshole just saw a running car and took it.
You're not wrong.

Carjacking is a robbery in which the item taken over is a motor vehicle.[1] In contrast to car theft, carjacking is usually in the presence and knowledge of the victim.

Chiefly, presence and knowledge of the victim. This would technically be car theft.

And? Has the car been rigged to explode if it drops below 60 mph or something? The kid is in the backseat in a carseat. Probably playing around on a little tablet. The kid is in more danger of being run over by some goofball speeding in the parking lot while walking into the store than just sitting there for a couple minutes.

Kids can survive this. It was how they were raised pre-1990. It'll be ok. I promise.

It's January. In Oregon. Beaverton is not the ghetto either.
