Oregon police are looking for a man who they say stole a car with a child in the backseat only to return the 4-year-old and reprimand the mom about her parenting.

The carjacking took place outside of a grocery store in Beaverton, Oregon on Saturday when the mom left the car running with the child in the backseat, local authorities said.

The mother left the car unlocked and went inside to buy a gallon of milk and some meat, acorrding to the Oregonian.

The thief happened to walk by and hopped in the car, the New York Post reported.

He soon realized the 4-year-old was in the backseat and U-turned in the parking lot, returning the child to the mother - but not without scolding her, according to Beaverton police.

"He actually lectured the mother for leaving the child in the car and threatened to call the police on her," Beaverton police spokesman Officer Matt Henderson told the Oregonian.

The thief ordered the mom to take the child before driving off in the stolen car.

"Obviously, we're thankful he brought the little one back and had the decency to do that," Henderson said.

My question is why didn't he remove the child from the backseat before he drove off? It's kinda like that dude who assulted a pregnant woman for smoking while pregnant. Something just doesn't add up.

And? Has the car been rigged to explode if it drops below 60 mph or something? The kid is in the backseat in a carseat. Probably playing around on a little tablet. The kid is in more danger of being run over by some goofball speeding in the parking lot while walking into the store than just sitting there for a couple minutes.

Kids can survive this. It was how they were raised pre-1990. It'll be ok. I promise.

It's January. In Oregon. Beaverton is not the ghetto either.
And look what happened in those few minutes. She left the car unlocked with a baby in the car, and somebody capitalized on that opportunity. It's not helicopter parenting; she as a parent, should've practiced more urgency and care for the baby's wellbeing.

It could've been a lot worse for everybody involved. Thankfully it wasn't for the baby's sake.

1) 4 year olds aren't babies.
2) It is an outlier event.

Packing a kid around while running errands is a pain that involves all sorts of risks. Just because the kid is with mom does not mean it is safer. It's what I like to call the "parental fallacy" that all of the knee-jerk helicopter crap is built on. Playing on these instinctual fears that parents have from back when we raided each others tribes with rocks and sticks and stole their wives and children. Today's reality is, strangers don't want your dumb kid. People who take them are almost always, with very few exceptions, family members in a custody dispute. I mean, look at this story, this guy turned around and gave the kid back. That's how much "do not want" strangers feel for your crotchspawn.

But back to safety. How many kids get run over in a parking lots? More than those that get abducted out of running cars, I assure you. Just because mom is there does not make them safer.

Y'all are acting like leaving a 4 year old unattended for a few minutes in a car seat is a death sentence. Helicopter parenting is real.
Simple solution, especially since it's winter; car off, lock the doors "I'll be back in a minute. Don't open the doors for anyone." 4 year olds (unless special needs) have enough brain power to know how a door lock operates; so even if mom did leave the car running "Hey, unlock the door for me." Basic shit my mother did when I was little. If it wasn't winter and you'd have to worry about leaving the air on and let him listen to his favorite music fine; but it isn't hard how to secure your vehicle and child at the same time.

I mean it's a funny story and all (which was probably what the thief was intending) but before we pat him on the back too much for sticking it to the mom let's all keep in mind he stole the car from the child too. As in, the child now loses all the benefits of his family having a car, and also has to deal with the financial burden that comes with recovering from that loss.

Only take away is that Oregon is so full of pretentious, holier than thou smug that its seeped into their criminal underclass.
