Windows 10 is rumored to be getting a major redesign. Don't screw this up, Microsoft!

It's just "we've always used windows so that's what we'll do" despite the fact the licensing is a bitch and linux is free. I'd be interested to know if any companies use linux on a large scale if only to prove that it does work and isn't against the laws of physics like people make it sound.
Microsoft does its best to nip any large-scale adoption in the bud.
Like blackmailing OEMs into not also offering Linux.

There's also the story of LiMux, Munich's own custom distro:
The city of Munich tried to switch their offices to Linux.
Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates showed up personally to speak with the mayor to convince him to revert back to Windows. That's how serious Microsoft took this.

And even though the mayor still stood by the switch, it got eventually reverted when the government changed (which just so happened to coincide with Microsoft moving their German HQ back to Munich).
The city saved millions in the short time they used Linux.

A quick look at Wikipedia regarding that says as of May 2020 they considered returning to limux again.

Shady stuff for sure though.

What are you going to do if they fuck up? Switch to Linux? >:>D
I would if Sims 2 and RPG Maker XP didn’t require like 10 gajillion requirements just to run it and praying I don’t fuck it up.

From my own usage really, I’m literally limited to using windows and unless someone is willing to port Sims 2 and RPG Maker XP over to Linux, it’s windows for me.

Edit: I realized how much Microsoft has fucked up the Gaming development on PC. I don’t even know if a lot of games these days even natively run on Linux to begin with.

PlayOnLinux doesn't work?

I use that for any and all games that don't play friendly with Linux and aside from the old Win 95 games that require that 256 color fuckery, they all work fine.

Take a look at Proton, Steam's compatibility layer for Linux. It's been working pretty well and it's easy to add 3rd party software to. If not, check out Wine and PlayOnLinux to see if they work.

yeah no, these mouth breathing faggots can’t even explain it simply. It’s a leftist meme of an instruction to just install and run Sims 2. Even worse considering it’s really hit or miss with all the visual glitches and all.

That's 3 years old, so you probably won't have to deal with some recompiled wine shit.
And all the other stuff are just Origin nonsense. Can't you just use your original discs or pirate it?

Well it is from the original discs but I’m not sure wine would be compatible with it.

The results are from an older test but the last test submission was July 2019 for Wine 4 (current version is Wine 5). Seems to be improving performance with each new Wine version

Big thankyou to windows 10 for constantly having graphics card crashes or failed sleeps and destroying my many notepad windows.
One of the worst operating systems I have ever used. It's like windows 98 but without all the DOS era customization that meant you could unfuck it.

My next PC is gonna be a *nix, no question. It'll almost certainly run my old windows games better than modern windows and will be able to run foreign games with wine locales because despite UTF-8 overtaking ASCII in 2008, windows still uses locale based character sets by default. What a fucking nigger,

All the developers who worked on beloved DOS and XP and 7 etc. have long since been replaced by dangerhairs and stinky indians. Absolutely nothing of worth left.

If we're being honest here, you could just run Windows XP and Windows 98 in a couple of virtual boxes and run every game that came out for PC up until around 2010 or so on even an entry level PC running Linux at this point. There's no point to getting rammed up the ass by Microsoft unless you play a lot of new games.

I know this isn't an operating system issue, but I just want File->Open to open the file explorer by default and not dump me into a list of recent documents.

Speaking of the File Explorer, even though I prefer it to a list of recent documents, I still prefer Linux to the default Windows File Explorer.
In the default windows file browser you have the This PC landing page. If you click on Documents, the file path is This PC\Documents. But that's not actually where it is. You also have the drives in This PC. You can go to your Documents folder through the drives which takes you to This PC\C:\Users\Username\Documents.
So you're in the exactly same place but your file path is different. Why is it like this? Why isn't the Documents shortcut in This PC an actual shortcut that once clicked, shows you the entire, real, file path? And yes, this is with the option "Display the full path in the title bar" turned on. If you go to Documents through Quick Access or This PC it just shows "Documents" even though that's not the whole fucking file path. Where's the entire file path, Microsoft? You take all this telemetry data from me you think you could give me the whole file path as a bit of compensation?

On Linux when you open the terminal you're dumped into your home folder, which is /home/username (unless you change it) which is the whole file path. You open up ranger and you're in /home/username. You open up Thunar and you're in /home/username. You open up Documents in any of these and you're in /home/username/Documents. You use a shortcut in any of these and you're in /home/username/Documents. C O N S I S T E N C Y. If you do anything weird with hard or soft links, those are still things you can control, and there's a name for them, and you can read documentation about them, and blog posts detailing what they are and how to use them in exhaustive detail. The ~ shortcut is just that, a shortcut. "echo ~" shows it's literally just a replacement for /home/username.

Really this whole thing is emblematic of why I prefer Linux to Windows on a deep, fundamental level.

I've seen a theory floated that MS are preparing to migrate from the NT based kernel, to one based on *nix. I will try to find the source, but it wasn't from just random nobodies.
The fact that their kernel is totally different to everyone else's and people make device drivers specifically for it is a key reason that only neckbearded weirdos like me use Linux on the desktop. This would be granting a gift to Canonical, IBM and friends.

They will proceed with the embrace, extend and extinguish thing they're doing with WSL 2. If they get migrate from the NT based kernel, it will be to something even more locked down to tighten their control on the desktop market further, and it will not be open source.

Microsoft has been catering to normalfags since the Big Bang.

Here's a brain teaser... what's the difference between having a computer in the 90's and having a computer now?

The answer is that back then, owning a computer was more of a luxury thing rather than something that's a necessity in every household (kinda like what TV's were back in the 1920's). At most, if you were in school you would only see those old Macintosh computers that played those big-ass floppy discs, otherwise they were mostly used in businesses, if that, and didn't have a GUI.

As such, the people that mostly used computers were nerds/techy people that were willing to learn about them and how they work, especially once shit like Windows 95 hit the scene and became the hottest shit since sliced bread. The biggest difference between then and now is control. Windows XP was the last OS by Microsoft in which you could customize your computer experience how ever you wanted, including getting rid of unwanted bloat. Back then computers came with a fuck-ton of installation discs, half of them drivers, and the other half optional software that came pre-bundled with the computer when you first bought it. So theoretically you could wipe the hard drive, only install the important drivers (like sound and video), and have a pleasant experience. Even though the OS was by Microsoft, YOU still had control of how you experienced it and no one gave a shit.

Windows 7 (and Vista to an extent) was the first OS in which shit REALLY started getting stupid. Nevermind the fact that you needed a fucking walkthrough on how to de-bloat the damn thing in the first place...
Windows7_debloat.png

... but any change you could potentially make would throw a pop-up asking "ARE YOU SURE?"... for literally EVERYTHING. I'd like to give normalfags back in the 90's the benefit of the doubt and say that they were a little smarter than your average braindead NPC of today. But now because of Win7 pulling this shit, it makes people start to second guess themselves... "oh, gee... maybe I really SHOULDN'T be doing all of these things, thanks Microsoft". So now you start to breed groups of people that believe that Microsoft has their own best interests at heart and leave their computer alone (unless you looked up how to enable the admin account and tell Win7 to go fuck itself). This is bad because now people aren't going to think for themselves when they have Microsoft to do the thinking for them. This creates laziness, ignorance, and just plain stupidity.

With Windows 10, Microsoft is just FLAT-OUT telling you that you're a stupid motherfucker that doesn't know any better, and that all its telemental shit is keeping an eye on you for your own protection and safety. It's literally taking away control of your computer experience by going "fuck you, this is how you will use the computer and you will like it". And of course, what has happened over the years when it comes to people and technology? The technology improves, yes, but people have gotten so fucking dumb about it that basic common sense shit just flies out the fucking window because they EXPECT the companies and corporations to fix their shit for them.

In a nutshell, Microsoft went from "Here's something fun we created just for you. Enjoy it however you want" to "This is OURS!!! You WILL use it how WE tell you to use it!!"

I would if I wasn't lazy. Proton works with almost every game I like these days and whatever autistic free game I'm into that month will probably work with the most autistic of OSes.

Too much effort, though.

Fucking why? Windows 10 is fine as it is (provided you configure it right) and it doesnt need any more globohomo (((modernization))). They already changed too much going from Windows 7 to 10 and now they wanna change more.
