Voice-activated AI (VAI) is increasingly ubiquitous, whether in the form of conversational assistants or more generalized personal assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri. Researchers to date have studied the social consequences of their design and deployment, with one focus being on the social implications of gendering VAIs. (Most VAIs have a feminine-sounding synthetic voice set by default.) A forthcoming study aims to advance previous work by undertaking a series of interviews with trans and/or nonbinary users of VAIs, a historically understudied group, to explore their experiences, wants, and needs. The coauthors say the results show that these needs are far more than improvements to representation and that users raise concerns around the framing of gender — even by well-intentioned developers.
As the researchers point out, voices are important elements of interaction to many trans people because of how deeply gendered different styles of speaking can be. An incongruence in voice can serve as a source of pain for a trans and/or nonbinary person’s sense of self. Moreover, voice can serve as a way in which people are identified as trans, potentially leading to discrimination and violence. A 2015 survey found that 46% of transgender people had experienced verbal harassment, 47% had been sexually assaulted, and 54% had experienced violence from a partner.
The researchers conducted interviews with a group of 15 participants recruited through a call to LGBTQ+ community centers along with LGBTQ+ Facebook groups based in two cities. They asked questions centered around core themes, specifically (1) the participants’ experiences of being represented by VAI, (2) their suggestions for VAI development, and (3) tensions with the expanding role of VAIs.
Thirteen out of the 15 participants were negative about the representativeness of VAIs’ voices, with 11 stating that VAIs were not designed for them. They pushed back against the idea that gender should be treated as equivalent to “where your voice falls within a stereotypical rage of pitch,” but at the same time, they proposed alternative forms of representation like providing a wide spectrum of “ungendered” voice options.
The participants in the study also worried about how technologies like VAIs might amplify the hardships they experience on a daily basis. Several had mixed feelings about the idea of a system featuring trans representation in voice and gender-affirming design, expressing privacy concerns and a skepticism about developers’ ability to deliver on their promises. A single fixed voice aimed to represent trans and/or nonbinary people, the participants said, would be a reduction of the diversity within the community and perpetuate the notion that specific vocal ranges are linked to specific genders.
“Implicit in our participants’ understanding of representation is the importance of recognition: a way of affirming the humanity, moral agency and equality of each other — as individuals, and as communities,” the researchers wrote. “This approach chafes with our participants’ understanding of how VAI designers approach representation. They worry that designers’ understanding contains only a surface-level approach to trans needs, visible in their focus on developing gender-neutral voices.”
The researchers cite Q, a project spearheaded by media company Vice and its for-profit spinoff Virtue, as an example of poorly representative, exclusive design. While Q was billed as the “world’s first nonbinary voice for technology” when it was announced in early 2019, the coauthors argue its design process — which partly entailed recording 6 people identifying as male, female, transgender, or nonbinary — “raises as many questions as it answers.” The developers behind Q appear to treat trans voices as representing a “monolithic population” rather than not those of men and women. Furthermore, by treating nonbinary voices as a “third gender option,” Q risks denaturing fixed, categorical ideas of gender, the researchers say.
To address these concerns and others, the coauthors recommend that VAIs at a minimum be designed with and for trans-specific privacy considerations, have features for trans-specific purposes, be representative and gender-affirming. Most importantly, they say the development of VAI features must be grounded in a participatory process.
“The development of VAIs that explicitly ‘move beyond merely ‘allowing’ trans people to exist’ would help bridge disparities experienced by this population under structural cisnormativity by providing material improvements that enhance their … comfort in identity, selfhood, embodiment, sexuality,” the researchers said. “Considering constraints within the commercial contexts where these devices are currently developed, we suggest that researchers and technologists go further and work outside these structures towards developing grassroots VAIs driven by and accountable to trans communities, while employing strategies for disrupting the aggravation of digital privacy breaches through the use of voice analytics.”

Good god, it's not THAT hard to avoid morbid obesity even if all you do is sit around like a lazy fuck all day - just don't eat so damn much. Even if their mom was enabling it, their mouth muscles do the chewing. And like how Rome wasn't built in a day, this flesh mound took a while to get to where they were. Surely they could've tried getting their mom to give them some healthy food, right? Broccoli can be delicious.

I think that just about sums it up, you can be as lazy and unproductive as you want but most people will platau at fat bastard, this person has shattered that barrier and now sits at amorphous blob, surgery isn't going to fix this alone.

Women's sports as an industry probably actually wants trans players which is why they allow this. The problem is while there are women good at sports there aren't enough to fill out whole leagues or fulfil Title IX so the industry is filled with quota hires who really shouldn't be there.
In men's sports if you're not pro by 21 it's over but for women it's not unusual for them to go pro in their late 20's but nobody is allowed to ask how someone who started so late could overtake someone who started as a teenager. The truth is the woman who started at 16 was never really trying or just plain untalented and should never have been there in the first place.
So as an industry, Women's sports probably wants these trans players as they're cheaper and more reliable than luring only half-interested girls through schools. The industry never cared much about ability because they're so desperate for numbers just to keep it afloat, which is why it was so easily taken over and agreed to this shit even though you'd expect sports to be a holdout.
It's not good for actual women in sport but most of them would never admit the truth about the industry.

Maybe I'm a bit nitpicking with this, but this depends on the sport. The antagonist of Rocky Balboa (2006) is played by an actual pro-boxer who didn't go pro until he was like 30. Although he did fight amateur before that. Same with some guys in MMA.

Yeah I meant more as in a team won't sign you. Often the only difference between a pro and an amateur is a pro gets paid. If you stick around long enough as an amateur you may still go pro later.
But in cycling you get women who have never done sport seriously get into it to lose weight after a pregnancy and turn out to be super talented and signed to a team within 2-3 years at like 27 because they need anyone they can find. They're never going to be at the Tour de France but they're still officially a pro who gets paid (or at least reimbursed for travel).
Yet with men you have guys who've trained at pro soccer academies for 10 years, quit due to an injury, switch to cycling and own at it, but still won't get signed because they're 22 and the teams already have enough 17 year olds to choose from. They can still take part in a lot of the same races the pros do but they'll never get paid to do it.
If my theory is correct then you won't get many trans players in sports like soccer which have enough players and academies to make more of them (and if you're not in an academy you're at the whim of a scout). Trans athletes will stick to more niche sports that will take anyone they can get or school sports stuff where they have to tick quota boxes.

To reach that size you need to consume an EXCESSIVE amount of calories, like constantly shoving fast / processed food into your gob and stopping only just enough to breathe. There's a reason an obese person is usually in the 250-350 pound range and it's because they overeat but still have just enough of the usual human activity that they're still burning enough calories simply existing to stay there. To get into the 500-600+ pounds you've got to be eating family size portions of fast food for multiple meals a day and literally doing absolutely nothing.

It's actually jarring that, as with nearly everything else, the most gullible to it all are young women. Actual, biological women who want to be "trendy" in bringing their own relevancy to ruin, but after reality hits hard, you can bet that a lot of them will go full terf.

Woke activism in general and trans activism in particular is just perfectly engineered to draw young women in.
As much as it pains me to admit this, women are, on average, more gullible than men. Not less intelligent, but more agreeable and less willing to call out bullshit. Or rather, to call out their friends' bullshit. Women will be plenty angry and disagreeable with their enemies, but they create the worst sort of hugboxing environment amongst themselves where they desperately try to project an image of kindness. Ironically these environments then get incredibly hostile to people perceived as disturbing the peace.
So. Those are the starting conditions. Then, most politically-minded women will give feminism at least some consideration. Those for whom the concepts resonate with their personal experiences will learn more about it, and eventually they'll get introduced to the concept of intersectionality that tells them that to be good feminists, they must also care about all these other issues. Because they're eager to please and they don't want to be the Bad sort of feminist, oh no, they start learning about a whole prepackaged worldview that has something to say about every issue imaginable. Support for the T is snuck in this way.
And so, step by step, women get drawn away from the very thing that first drew them to feminism - their self-interest. Centering yourself in your own activism? Yikes, sweaty, you really need to examine your attitude because your kind of White Feminism isn't wanted here. We need to center Queer voices. Listen to your Black trans sisters and don't you dare invalidate them with your cisnormative notions of what womanhood is. Sit down, shut up and listen until you've unpacked your privilege.
And that's how you end up with feminists cheering for the destruction of women's sports. Because they've been systematically taught to distrust their own thoughts because their thoughts are
