US "The Squad" Megathread - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Talib Derangement Syndrome

I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

I'm not usually one for conspiracies along the lines of ”everything I don't like or find a bit odd glows in the dark”, but knowing how the CIA spied on a lot of left wing activists historically and are known for extrajudicial killings, the idea that they tried to get members of the Squad killed seems possible. Unlikely, but possible.
About the only time I am unhappy the glowies didn't succeed in bumping people off.

It especially seems somewhat plausible if it lends credence to their "WHITE SUPREMACISTS ARE RUNNING AMOK! HIDE YOUR NIGGERS AND YOUR DARKIES, THEY'RE COMING TO KILL 'EM!" narrative.

I’m leading the call for national security powers to not be expanded in light of the attack on our nation’s Capitol that occurred two weeks ago, as such measures often lead to the erosion of Americans’ civil liberties.

You don't get to lay with feral dogs and complain you got fleas. You made your bed. now lie in it. The nelibs are the ones in power, not you.

I'm confused. Is Rashida Tlaib saying that the Patriot Act is a bad thing by comparing it to McCarthyism or is she saying that it's a good thing and should be used against ”white supremacists”?

Either way, a stopped clock's right twice a day and by opposing a second Patriot Act, the Squad (and I rarely have a good excuse to say this) are right on the money.

I heard Jimmy Dore talking about this and I thought I was delirious. I'm glad that I've been ignoring Rashida because she's suddenly doing something useful and it would be a shame to have to back track.

AOC will probably just continue spazzing out about pointless bullshit because she's mentally ill.

AOC and Cruz just need to have a debate like he did with Sanders. AOC likely won't do it unless it's via skype or she the questions beforehand because she is so fake and manufactured with her social media and only talking to safe media. A real debate, even against someone like Matt Gaetz or Lauren Boebert would show how hollow she actually is.

She doesn't need to have a debate with anyone. If you don't realize how hollow she is at this point, even with everything she's said, how she sounds, how she looks, etc., you're a simp, plain and simple.

Hilarious! Nobody feels safe around AOC, probably not even her boyfriend, if she still has one.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)appeared Thursday on Cuomo Prime Time and spoke about the continuing threat of Republican lawmakers carrying guns onto the House floor. Ocasio-Cortez skipped President Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday, choosing instead to support striking grocery workers in the Bronx. But she said safety was a factor in that decision.

“I think we also had very real security concerns as well, as you mentioned earlier. We still don’t yet feel safe around other members of congress,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “How much is ‘we’?” asked Chris Cuomo. Ocasio-Cortez responded, “I think a very considerable amount.”

Ocasio-Cortez cited Rep. Andy Harris as proof of a security threat. The Republican congressman from Maryland reportedly tried to sneak a gun into the House chamber but was stopped by Capitol police, at which point he reportedly tried passing it off to someone else.

Following the deadly insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6, carried out in an attempt to stop the certification of Biden’s election victory, some House members have become suspicious that their Republican colleagues may have been in on it. Metal detectors were installed outside the House chamber as an extra precaution, but some members have attempted to flout the new safety measures. Rep. Lauren Boebert, the Colorado Republican who has spoken openly about her desire to carry a gun with her at all times, reportedly clashed with Capitol police on the first day the metal detectors were installed. And some House members have just ignored them after setting them off.

“The moment you bring a gun onto the House floor in violation of rules, you put everyone around you in danger,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “It is irresponsible. It is reckless. But beyond that, it is a violation of rules. You are openly disobeying the rules that we have established as a community, which means that you cannot be trusted to be held accountable to what we’ve decided as a community.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a hefty fine for lawmakers who bypass the metal detectors, but besides the financial liability, Ocasio-Cortez believes bringing a gun to the House floor creates an unnecessary danger.

“I don't care if you accidentally set it off. I don't care if you intentionally set it off. I don't care if you don't set it off at all. You are endangering the lives of members of congress,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And it is absolutely outrageous that we even have to have this conversation.”

Why does anyone need to bring a gun onto the floor of the House of Representatives in any case?

So let me get this straight, concelaed carry among members of congress/senate is a big no no with fines attached, yet their still calling the Qoomer tard out a "deadly insurrection". I mean DC police did fuckall in the beginning ( can't really blame them after all the defunding bullshit and ACAB garbage) and building security was nonexistant, were I in the senate/congress I'd keep a loaded piece on me at all times just in case.

Someone who really wants to bring back dueling.
I'd prefer legislation that ended in "two men enter, one man leaves".
