I don't believe this has been mentioned:- Grandma is unwell and coming from a country with universal health care that, for the most part, is free. Now she is coming to a country that clearly does not have universal nor free healthcare. This could be a bad situation if she urgently needs meds or hospitalization. FL to Ottawa is a long unadvisable trip if you are acutely ill.

Sure, a public hospital would likely treat her, but they would eventually expect payment. It wouldn't be unheard of for a hospital to hire a Canadian solicitor if the bill was worth it.

If she needs medication, she will find out how much the US inflates the costs of many drugs simply because they can.

TL;DR- One episode of ill health while on vaycay in FL could wipe out Granny's savings and then some. I don't think they thought this through.

Eh, it's easy enough to get traveller's insurance between the US and Canada for emergencies. And if things get gradually worse, they can just put her on a plane back to Canada, provided the covid restrictions allow it.

They get insurance. There are tons of Canadian seniors who live in the southern US states, they're called "snowbirds" and this isn't a new concept. As long as they're not out of Canada for longer than six months in a row, they won't lose their Ontario coverage (don't know about other provinces).

This was my initial thought as well about the concept of Granny coming to the US to "recuperate" from her medical woes. To put it bluntly, it's a very bad idea. Also isn't the border still pretty locked down? You have to have a damn compelling reason to cross, and "I'm old and sick and I want to visit my son in Florida" is a long shot.

Land borders are closed but you can still fly.

It is nearly impossible for a parent to be declared a dependent for health insurance purposes (or most other purposes).

Florida is having a problem with covid tourism and won't be allowing non-residents to get a vax, so granny would be screwed out of that, too.

Granny would get Medicare, as she’s over 65. Not sure about her foreign status though, that’s the only confusion. Still, she’s going to live with her son who already lives here so he has likely thought of it. Depending on his job, he can probably cover her on his insurance too.

Everybody over 65 in the US gets Medicare, whether they have insurance or not.

If she isn’t a citizen of the US I don’t see how she is eligible for Medicare. Regardless of her son being a there. She would have to apply for all that. She didn’t pay into the US system and she isn’t some third world refugee. She will also need care at home home daily . I assume she is going to be helped by all her children and they will work it all out as is goes along. This is a bad idea

Looks like mom might be taking some time off to take care of her mother (not familiar with Canadian system, but they most likely still pay her salary if she proves she's taking care of an elderly member of her direct family). Grandma's house is probably too small to accomodate another person and it has been discussed here that Chantal might have inherited her hoarding tendencies from grandma.

In other words, grandma lives in a 1 bedroom hoarder's den and they need to move her to uncle's fancy house so she can get proper assistance.

Sure she can but only if it is food related. She has a way of intensely recalling memories of food she has eaten in the past. I remember she was reminiscing about some food a few months back and she asked peetz if he remembered it. He replied "no, I don't remember food the way you do".

She can't remember her grandfather except for the fact that he had candy. She remembers her first bag of chips more than any other childhood memory. It made quite a lasting impression on her for some reason. I think something is horribly mis-wired in her fat little brain.

Jen (the love and light she claims to be) actually joined in with her commenters to attack Chantal awhile back, to try and garner the support she was so rapidly losing (which now doesn't exist). Then Jen got royally told off and put in her place by Amy (in a now deleted video), it was really glorious. Why Chantal is back in her comments section is truly mind boggling. I love deathfat battles. What a race to the bottom.
