ODSP (disability in Ontario) would probably be the only benefit she could go on, as she doesn't have children/dependents/spouse and has no work history with which to go on EI, but Ontario Works also offers a baseline of ~700. However, I think one has to be actively looking for work to qualify, but all one has to do is show up to some BS seminars and say "oh man, it's hard out there" based on what I can read.

So, if she were to attend seminars and talks with these social workers, and really put some effort into being a lazy asshole, she could get that extra ~$700.

I don't think she was being genuine when she made that comment. Perhaps wanting to downplay just how much she is getting from monetizing her addiction.
Peetz may put up with a lot but I really don't think he would have moved in with her if she was making so little, especially considering the debt she put them in the last time the lived together.
I think she is making what she considers good money, and he saw the potential for it to improve even more.
When they moved in perhaps she was on an upwards swing income wise? I'm guessing things aren't as rosy now hence her stress.
