Tabletop Roleplaying Games (D&D, Pathfinder, CoC, ETC.)

So we did a livestream tonight where we went over Battletech. The gimmick? I basically knew jackshit about it."

We mostly talk about the background and then the first encounter with the Clans. I get horrified at the sheer fucking stupidity that seems rife in the people in this setting.

BattleTech is best setting.

Come on, man. You link a JagerMech going full gangsta and forget to show people the greatest BattleTech illustration ever made? Shame on you.

A Dragon doing a flying kick off a cliff right into an Enforcer's cockpit. If that's not Peak Kurita, I don't know what is.
Okay, that is pretty badass and I am sorry for not posting it, but how about an Atlas punching a Clanner straight into the soul so hard, all his cannister-born offspring will come out of the iron womb bruised?

Atlas Mechs punching stuff into bolts and pieces is always pretty great.

Peak Kurita is a slavic man named Akira Kobyashi piloting a mech with a sword while wearing a kimono and a katana in order to commit warcrimes.

Alright, you redeemed yourself. And I'm glad the Atlas is the BattleTech mascot again, partially because of HBS's game (despite its flaws). I love the lines on the Timber Wolf (I'm a fan of non-humanoid 'Mechs), but good ol' Deathshead there will always have a special place in my heart.

I mean, just look at this thing. Even taking fire it still looks badass.

Kuritan warcrimes. Or, as we call them, An Average Tuesday.

You may not like it, but this is what Peak Scouting Performance looks like.

New headcanon: The Kentares Massacre was ordered on a Tuesday.

It's just the famed Steiner efficiency at work. You don't have to report the findings of your scouting mission, if most of the enemy troops you discovered is still stuck to the heels of your assault mech.

Battletech is a fun setting. Adam just has his own issues with it and I’m not the greatest at explaining things quickly very good.
It's more the itch that this would've scratched was covered by Gundam for me, and on top of that it runs into the Shadowrun problem for me where I'd probably not mind playing say Time of War or the classic RPG... it's just I'd rather play another game before it.

With Shadowrun, it'd be Cyberpunk. With Battletech, I'd probably either pick Mekaton Zeta or any of the Fantasyflight 40k games.

Calling it now. WOTC will put put new edition of DnD in 2024. 50 year anniversary of the game.
I'm more likely to believe they'll just shit up a bunch of modules or pay weirdo bugmen to make a shitty Best of Book instead. Whatever is the cheapest... though tbh a 6e would make sense coming out around that time.
See your bet and I raise you WOTC removing defined "races" in D&D 6e in favor of either "backgrounds", or the variant rules they published on Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Also they get rid of ability scores too because how dare you not be able to do everything equally.

It depends how woke they are. After the recent Cauldron book, despite WOTC caving to SJW demands, it still wasn't good enough for woke Twitter. "It should be free! Races still have some differences!". We've also seen antifa and BLM thrown under the bus now Biden is President. Going woke has been shown to be unpopular and unprofitable. Paizo and OSR games are slowly eating their lunch. I don't have any concrete numbers, but I've not seen anyone talk about Magic: The Gathering for a long time. Add in the China coof, and it's not looking good for them.

I don't follow the RPG scene closely (I just play the games) but I can see this going one of three ways.
  1. They do release a new version in 2024 like @anti SJW said, but it'll be the Warhammer/iPhone model of barely perceptible incremental upgrades every couple of years so they have an excuse to resell the setting books over and over again. I'm not sure if they'd wipe DnD Beyond. I've heard they did that with the move from 4th to 5th, but if that's true, I can't imagine them getting away with that now.
  2. They are keeping a popular setting in their back pocket for a major push. They already did Ravenloft and Eberron, so that leaves two obvious choices.
    1. Planescape. Given the love of the PC game, I wouldn't be surprised to see a remake to coincide.
    2. Dragonlace. There was recently a lolsuit when WOTC tried to not publish the book via contract loop hole for not being woke enough. They settled out of court immediately. If we assume a year to write each entry of the trilogy, it would be a great tie in for a new setting book.
  3. They do nothing for the 50th anniversary.

All of these can be modified depending on how woke they are. If they're woke and double down, I can see it being the horror show you all described. Races are all the same (except the superiour orcs). Named characters are made gay or trans. The legacy is ignored as "old white dudes", and WOTC goes down in flames while Paizo and the indies rise up to take their place. Alternatively, they join in with the rest of the world throwing antifa and BLM and LGBT rights under the bus. All the woke shit is quietly left out of new editions outside of a single paragraph about gender and sexuality in the character creation. Art will either be desexualised not out of political pandering, but chasing the family market, or they'll swing hard in the other direction and we'll have artwork that looks like something from the days of Heavy Metal magazine.

And whatever happens, someone will complain about the use or lack of Helvetica font.

Every character sheet will come prepared with the line "Skincolor: Black" in the character description.

Also, I almost expect them to remove all racial/cultural/background/class modfiers to be replaced with a newly introduced gender-based modifier, which will look something like this:

Female Heterosexual: +1 Strength (WOMEN STRONK)
Homosexual: +1 Charisma
Transexual: +1 Stunning, +1 Brave
...
Male Heterosexual: -1 Intelligence, -1 Wisdom

probably this, 6e will be not be even be 5.5e at best but just 5e with all the changes put into new core books to ride the new version and it's anniversary for sales. least amount of effort for maximum shekels. at best some superficial changes to have a better excuse but amounts to nothing more than houserules.

EDIT: although, 2024 is still a while away, who knows what the economy looks like then.

Paizo is just as woke and retarded as Wotc.

current wotc? not even close. there was hardly any shit in pf2, and they dialed even that back from the public test (which people still meme about). nerfing seoni's outfit was completely unnecessary, but eh, it's current year.
rumor has it they canned all their woketards a while back, but never found concrete proof that and I'm not familiar with them that close to know the names and what to look for. otoh they were quite eager to work with the wheelchair chick, but that might've just been some twittertard for PR, we'll see if she ever gets writing credit somewhere and what she shits out (apparently even leigh "I am games journalism" alexander can deliver acceptable work if she isn't up her own ass)

the other difference is that, at least from my impression, is that paizo has actual fans that like the company, what they put out, and how they operate. meanwhile you got wotc whose whole presentation down to the website is as soulless and corporate as it gets (do they even still have forums?) with a horde of soibugs only liking dnd for it's popularity and brand name. same reason all the woketards latch unto it, since there's no point subverting anyone besides the biggest target.

Funny, but trying a little too hard. The woketards have gotten where they are now by gradually taking over and changing and removing things, but always leaving themselves an out to yell "WE'RE NOT HARMING YOU IN ANY WAY, QUIT BEING SUCH A WHINY CRYBABY" at anyone who points it out. So, they're likely to not even mention the existence of male heterosexuals in this scenario. If anyone asks, they reply that those get no bonus for balancing reasons and then go on to call the person asking a whiny crybaby.
