This is actually true. If you ever look at someone's picture and notice it looking super compressed or low res, its because lower end cameras/crushed jpegs can actually mask someone's poor skin with their shittiness.

It's because almost all phone cameras have tiny sensors that aren't capable of resolving detail for the high res images they output. Most modern smartphone cameras are basically upscaling their images, usually with subtle filters or with the help of AI. So even in photos that haven't had filters manually applied to them by the user there is still a lot of smoothing going on.
