Was anyone here around during the time PK owned an oekaki? I think it was 'papaya kitty' oekaki or something. a friend used to frequent it, i remember being too intimidated, because there was some 'rule' in set that you had to be 'good enough' to draw on PK's 'expert' board, otherwise you were stuck on the 'beginner' board with all of the people apparently not good enough in PK and crew's eyes.

I'm going to guess the beginner forum wasn't ever visited by them either?

I have no idea. I also remember her saying that she was streaming her usual SFW pokemon stuff (on her main deviantart) but when I loaded up the stream she was drawing porn.
I'm still scarred to this day :(
Well that's skeevy as all hell. A lot of underage kids probably saw that. Like someone said earlier, it's pretty creepy that she makes these groups and comics that attract mostly underage fans and makes porn that actually plays a role in the comic's plot. Just, ew.

To be honest, it was just a default Photoshop brush set to a low opacity.

HEH HEH HEH.
This is funny because as someone had already mentioned here, PK gets pretty fucking indignant when asked about brushes. It seems she uses the default Sai brushes and can just tell people that she uses them instead of going off on the asker.

ETA: Today's update. Sure been a while since we last saw Papaya! Though what exactly is the point of this comic? The dialogue sounds stilted.

"COME GET SOME PIPING HOT, FRESH ART! COMES IN EVERY COLOR!" *comic has limited palette* lol

Also, PK met up with Rebecca Sugar. I don't see any of her Noiz piercings as all.

Well often a limited palette can be a good thing, really all the colours should look somewhat unified even if they're different.

Though the dialogue sounds way too much like some strawman conversation.

Well, I didn't mean to say that limited palettes are "bad" per se, just the irony in that one comic. With PK, it seems like recently she colors on either extremes: very limited color palette and very saturated technicolor dream coat, very rarely inbetween.

I do like the use of limited colors in art, this PK picture is pretty neat.

I think the ironic thing about her art coming "in every colour" is not that she uses a limited palette, as much as the fact that she's been using always the same limited palette.

Anyway this already tells us that next update is going to be on sigh Beleth again, which is great for us because we get to see more self-inserty stuff but maybe not so great for those who want to see the rest of Seeds.
I don't know, it's good to draw what you love but I think it shouldn't be this clear that you prefer a character so much over the others.

Using only your favorite character is a big no-no when it comes to publishing work (also it makes it easy to become a mary-sue). Sure, she can draw as much Beleth as she wants (for stand alone art) but to make it suddenly the main character when previously it wasn't is just fucking confusing to the audience. I thought we were following Min and Cress and now all the sudden it's all about Beleth's butthole or something. As much as Min and Cress were obnoxious, at least they were characters with a goal that introduced the audience to the rest of the world bit by bit-- making it easier to digest.
Now all the sudden we're neckdeep in Hellside (I think that's what it's called) and I'm fucking lost. I really don't care that Beleth went from a blonde cat to a dark red cat-- that backstory is just try hard/edgey while remaining dull from what I'm seeing. Also the weird demon team is confusing as fuck.

I feel like most of PK's work is explicable through the lens of "DA roleplayer trying to make it big." She's got a bunch of habits that are antithetical to telling a story for a larger audience, both in writing (obvious Mary Sue/pet characters, lots of focus on character sexuality and other things that aren't really relevant to the story, taking the plot into meaningless cul-de-sacs to do something with the pet characters) and in art (super-elaborate ~special~ character designs that prevent a feeling of a consistent world, general focus on overelaborate "shiny" presentation instead of coherent visual flow).

That page has been bugging me for a bit now and I finally figured out why. PK may be decent in art, but she's rather messy when it comes to layouting her comic panels and speech bubbles. It's almost a chore to read through that page because it's just all over the place. Compare it something like this:

3730843-the+sandman-overture+%232+-+page+7.jpg
3730843-the+sandman-overture+%232+-+page+7.jpg

Where you have a lot going on in the span of two pages, and yet it doesn't completely overwhelm you because, aside from containing essential dialogue, the speech bubbles help guide your eyes from panel to panel. Hers just take up too much space and do little to assist readers.

Addendum:
If space is a problem then she could've made it work with better planning, as demonstrated here:

All the panels are the same size, and a huge chunk of them are dialogue and speech bubbles, and yet you can still understand what's going on. This is thanks to Bruce Timm showing exactly what needs to be shown (and hiding what isn't needed, e.g. Harvey Dent's face when Madeline teases him shows only his eyes since that's all you need to see in this panel) while also working with strong and simple character designs.

I thought Itchy Itchy was a nice change of pace (as I mentioned earlier in the thread) and fleshed out some of the new characters that appeared in Chapter 5 of Seeds. Then it lead to weeks upon weeks of Beleth focus with Broken Toy.

It seems like a lot of people love Beleth (she claims her BT prints all sold out, I assume she brought 50-100 copies of it?), so we're in for a long ride until PK latches on to yet another self-insert. I have a feeling that after "This Kills the Crab Cat", we're going to get Andre focus.

She's going to fix up the five Seeds chapters for her Kickstarted book in July, but I bet my ass she might worm Beleth and Andre's way in retroactively somehow.

While I agree that drawing is pretty nice - I'm pretty sure the colors are just like that because she's using pretty close to the game's palette.
It looks nice and it's appropriate for the subject matter but it's not very original.

I have a feeling they take up so much space so she can avoid painting a background.

What's that first image from? The one with the hand to separate the two pages, and the liver/teeth vines. The art in those pages looks gorgeous.

Speaking of backgrounds, at the beginning of Seeds they were abundant. Not extremely detailed but still varied and present. They seem to have slowly degraded.

It's an update and boy is it a doozy! Finally an answer to a question...if you like your answers phrased like it came from a schizophrenic physicist's word salad. It's like PK takes questions just to make the answers more obnoxious than needed.
pride-face.jpg

Sweet dreams, guys!

So is the concept of these ask strips basically just soliciting questions, then backhandedly insulting their askers via non-answers, like Strong Bad Emails except not funny, or intelligently written, or endearing? Or does PK not understand that the benighted ask-blog format doesn't belong outside of Tumblr? Or both?

It was mentioned earlier in the thread that PK is quite efficient in art and puts out pieces at a regular pace, so maybe she's sacrificing a bit of quality for quantity?

It's from Neil Gaiman and J.H. Williams (III)' Sandman Overture, a prequel to his The Sandman series*. I've not yet read it myself but the art alone makes me want to**.

*I say "a prequel" because the series has already had another in the form of Endless Nights (another highly recommended book if you're a sucker for gorgeous and varied art styles). Though Overture covers events that lead directly to Preludes and Nocturnes, the first book in the entire main series.
**I've not yet read the book because alas I've been busy with other forms of entertainment, but I think it'd be best for you to read up on The Sandman main series first so you can better understand Overture. Though if you're just there for the art then go for it, it's gorgeous.

I'm probably slow at noticing, but I see that PK changed the website layout to reflect the only characters that matter to her at current (Until she picks a new self insert-- i mean favorite.)

So much for those two "main characters" from the beginning of the story, I guess!

Same with her porn site. It has present-time Beleth and the penis-having lesbian horse. Honestly I expected Alice and Jacklyn since they are "main" characters in the Forbidden Flora.

I noticed PK's twitter handle now has "ベレト" (Bereto) in it. I'm assuming this is supposed to be Beleth's name in katakana, but it's incorrect going by how she pronounced their name in a stream(s). Being a nerd about the Japanese language, Beleth's name in katakana would be "バレス" or"バレッス" (Baresu/Baressu). disregard this

ETA: バ is not ベ, whoops

I don't think that it is fair to berate her about it though
ビレート (bereeto) is katakana for berate, ビレト (bereto) is the translation of her hiragana name into katakana (which should have been in katakana because it's a foreign word)
