I have a theory that, to a certain extent, the ""elites"" have degenerated in a similar fashion to their propagandized western serfs. What I mean by that is, much like the American public has been dumbed down over decades, the elites have become sloppy in their actions of late, taking their assumed total control for granted. The "emperors" are being seen more and more without their clothes these days.

Thats a common pattern. The elites get plump and incompetent and then get replaced by foreigners or upstarts.
