Communism is an extremely reductionist philosophy, so it attracts people who have a very simplistic view of the world. And since these people are idiots, communism also attracts a bunch of much smarter grifters, psychos and assholes that swoop down to prey on them.
You know all those politicians, bankers and other assorted fine sociopathic fellows everybody likes complaining about so much? Well, in a communist system the ones that were already there may get the bullet, but they are immediately replaced by exact same type of degenerate. Only now they're in the Politburo, running by Party fiat without even having to pretend that the will of the people means anything.
