So which one is next up on the troon queue:
Spoony
Mike Matei
Pat the Nes Punk
The entire gamegrumps crew at once
Doug Walker?
Pools are open
Going against the grain: Not Spoony. Even setting aside the fact he doesn't have enough drive to do it these days, I just don't think he's
that breed of crazy.
Not Mike or Pat. Mike is an obnoxious, possibly racist jackass and general dumbfuck, but other than that, he doesn't seem to have any lingering demons. Neither does Pat. I'd suggest his co-host Ian before Pat, but I don't think him either. Most of the "hardcore" retro crowd - them, LGR, 8-Bit Guy, the Sacks, etc - actually seem to "have it together", for the most part.
Same with Doug... Despite everything drama-wise that surrounds him, he seems to be pretty "together" and chill.
The ones that troon always seem to have an
edge to them, for lack of a better way to put it. Not "edgy", more just... a sense of forced energy, maybe? The ones that seem really chill and relaxed, usually don't.
Maybe Duncan from the Yogscast? I actually like him, but for a while with how he was wearing his hair I thought he
had trooned out.
Or Nerd Cubed. He already has that "Quirky is a personality!" thing going, kinda, and is
hyper progressive.
Sterling and Spoony make me appreciate Angry Joe more. Well, not 'appreciate' but... something. He hates most of his fans, hates doing the videos they like, loves political sperging on twitter, seems to hate the game industry... but he keeps going, just getting a little fatter with a little less hair every day. But he's never completely imploded. He still puts out content regularly unlike Spoony. He hasn't thrown on a wig and falsetto like Jim out of desperation or , he just kinda... is. As much as his yelling and feigned outrage over stuff annoys me, I can't help but think that he's got one up on a lot of the people who started grew channels around the same time.
So basically you're saying Angry Joe is William Shatner.
The main difference between this fat piece of shit and TotalBiscuit is how much more professional TB was.
I admit, dying a shitty death gave TB a lot of good points for me. TB was involved in a lot of shit, like the trap thing, having slapfights on twitter and reddit and so on. The thing is, it was almost exclusively outside of his commentary and videos. I watched a lot of his stuff - reviews, Starcraft tournaments, Terraria LP and it wasn't there.
I don't remember him being political a lot, outside of some jabs at the English monarchy and (I think) Margaret Thatcher's policies.
Stephanie Jim James Jambo is completely different, he is whining about capitalism, BLM and shit like that, he is taking hormones on camera, he has weird ramblings about how he likes to suck dicks to defend sonicfox (I assume the dick sucking was performed via a gloryhole, I don't think anyone would want to stick a dick into that thing).
TB had standards, he would point out the technical stuff and options even in the games that he liked, while Jimmy is making up political bullshit to place the game in the worst list.
TB had a somewhat cool voice, Jim have an extremely annoying screeching.
And so on and so on.
There's a reason TB was basically the
icon of "successful youtube game critic", and Jim... Well...
isn't. To this day, really, there still isn't a proper heir to TB's 'throne'.
He knew his stuff, he connected with his audience well, he was "professional" for whatever that means in context, he was relatively fun to listen to, and he did a damned good job and was a hard worker. Everyone else fails at one or more of those.
The only person on deck I think
could take TB's place has no interest in it, and that's Gopher. Gopher has his niche, and he's content there. I can't begrudge him that.
