RPGnet Forums

Pretty sure he's just another jellyhead with zero fucking knowledge of history other than "white peepo are evil colonisers, and muslims trannies LGBTQ native peoples etc etc are the colonised". Well I tell ya hwat, if whypipo are so fuckin' dangerous you'd best stop pissing them off by constantly blaming them for everything wrong with the world.

How long do you think you'd last on RPGnet using an adjective like 'byzantine' or wanting to author a historically accurate RPG setting in which you play Ottoman Muslims with five sex slaves each and a small legion of Janissaries you're about to send back to their home city to murder their kin?

I mean pretty much any historical society is going to breach conventional moral codes in pretty overt ways, most gm's either go 'disney' were you sanitize the shit out of it or downplay it-because playing an endless gritty shit show is unworkable if you're trying to do a fun romp . Their's other problems such as white colonial hang writting being whiggish when applied, such as writting lots of indications of how things will play out and putting the world in a stasis waiting for it to occur. I remember a Sengoku Jidai setting game were their was lots of hang wringing about the Christinization and the guns, despite the fact the period concludes with the Tokugawa shogunate and the japanise in general don't sync with post colonial whiggish history narratives outside of that time the western powers effectively let them know they couldnt ignore the world anymore by throwing our weight around......which then led to them becoming a big player on the world stage and could have really fucked us if it'd gone differant.
Personally I tend to go for a moderated approach of acknowlaging but not making it vulgar. For example ramping up the difficulty for on social roles if you're in the 'wrong' group.

I ran the WFRP 'Empire In Flames' campaign years ago and watched amused as my players developed their characters into a lethal pack of combat assholes.
Of course I didn't warn them that there was a fair bit of 'social combat' late in the game. Their filthy band of dung-smeared, rusty-armored, blood-crusted and (in one case) mostly naked murderhobos didn't do so well in the halls of power. Now THAT was fun to GM, I tell ya.

I run stuff that's mostly basically medieval Europe with low tech (unreliable flintlocks etc) and low magic (as in, there's maybe 12 mages in the entire world and none of them are interested in leaving their library to spend a month getting saddle blisters and shitting in a hole in the ground). It's great because if some faggot wants to play a faggot in a time when faggots are lynched if they get caught with a dick in their mouth, well, they can. I have the setting, the players have the agency, and all there is are consequences. If they want to play the aforementioned faggot and end up at the wrong end of a rope for making a pass at the village warden, that's their fault, not mine.

At the other extreme I have also run cyberpunk stuff based on the Budayeen from Effinger's 'When Gravity Fails'. Hard to be a grandstanding SocJus when the setting is a completely multicultural ghetto ruled over by Muslims in which race and gender reassignment is both completely undetectable and totally reversible. Yeah, yeah, you're a gay black muslim man who was born a straight Japanese Christian woman, big deal, there's nine other people like you in the Budayeen and eight of them would fuck me for the lint in my pockets.
I swear it's a great setting to piss off the snowflake players, because most of the NPC's are snowflakes too, and snowflakes in the setting are utterly quotidian.

God, I unironically love Effinger's Marid Audran novels. I'd love to play in a setting like that just for the novelty of it, even if I had to watch my step around that cocksucker Lt. Hajjar.

Talsorian did a cyberpunk 2020 (IIRC) splatbook for it in the early 90’s, but I never read it. I just made my own setting. Don’t piss off Chiri or the Black Widow Sisters.

So has anyone on RPG.NET said anything about this yet?

The mods on RPGnet are equally bigoted as those they ban. It's just that those they ban are bigoted about the wrong things.
Those they ban are not even bigots. They merely hold different opinions on a site run by crazy people fanatically attached to their own opinions and the wrongness, or actually outright evil, of anyone who deviates from them in even the slightest way. And sometimes, they even just stupidly don't understand what someone said and get angry about that.

Isn't that autism in a nutshell?

Just replace the Sonic ranting with with an RPGnet mod's take on cultural appropriation.

Some controversy over larping.

Permanent ban for arguing over D&D math. I'm not into D&D, but it feels that there's some balancing issues that these guys refuses to address.

Moving on, mod team are punishing people for quoting misogynist words.

Another visit from the culture police.

And the mods hate being held accountable so they ban prople who tried to contest their bans and the only way to contact someone takes several months via an email address and you don't know who you're talking to.

What the fuck. Admitting straight up that trying to research every goddamned oppressed people (and just about EVERYONE was getting oppressed at one time or another) is more work than it's worth is deserving of a 30 day ban. Way to make that stab at being the biggest retard on the mod team, Bcaugust54. I hope you get fucked with a cactus.

And I love how this comes on the heels of Arethusa hitting that poor dumb fucker with a thirty day for 'cultural appropriation' over a sweat lodge purification ritual. Look, do you want us to 'tell their stories' or not? This is literally 'heads they ban you, tails they ban you' faggotry.
Now that I've actually read that thread, it's an case of someone randomly being made an example of for complaining about researching cultural history when this is supposed to be a hobby.

You know, I‘ve never had a problem with them having that policy. There are some good reasons to have it, even if just to keep tempers cool to prevent idiots from digging themselves a deeper hole...

But dear god does he make it sound whiny and entitled. Either just make a basic polite post about it, or actually explain some of the rationale for it, and maybe people will say “oh, they do have good reasons I’ll listen. None of this “no special builds, no tricks, just don’t do it.” You’re not funny enough and you sound butthurt.

Before I got pernabanned from there, I called out one of the mods for basically saying the same thing I said that got me a 3 day ban in a different thread.

The response was "I'm a mod so I can do it and you can't. "

Did you ever appealed it?

On the one hand it's true that history was politically incorrect compared to the kind of radical progressives that use "RPGnet Forums", but on the other hand the barbarism often gets exaggerated by atrocity stories told about enemies. For example, there's no evidence that anyone was ever actually put to death by scaphism (it was a story Greeks told about how nasty Persians were) and America in the 19th century wild western era only hanged a few dozen people a year for violent crimes. Fantasy settings are often absolutely ludicrously violent to the point where society is basically the Khmer Rouge killing fields and wouldn't survive more than a few years. This is especially true in video games, I can't really speak for tabletop games since they were before my time. What I'd go for is a balanced approach where realistic sexism/racism exists with people throwing around hilarious slurs as appropriate, but it isn't normal to straight up murder everyone you meet with a sword on sight.

Japan wasn't at all close to winning World War 2 since their industry was tiny compared to the allies. The best they could have done was take over the small parts of Asia they had before the war and then industrialised into a major power at peace.

Hahahaha.

The appeal system is utter bullshit. It's a complete black-box from the user end, you don't even know if anyone ever reads your damned appeal. Most people never hear shit on an appeal. And if your ban is a month or less, you might as well just wait it out - they won't usually even bother to act for anything less.

One of the more common tricks I'll use is soft nudges for the player for example I increase the difficulty social rolls if you're in the 'wrong' group combined with telling the player when something won't be accepted.

Mama Voodoo is secretly a nerdy white dude larping as the wokest yaaaas qween to ever defend Star Trek Discovery and you can't convince me otherwise.
Yeah, faking an entire pregnancy and baby pretty much confirms it.

It also occurs to me that Voodoo has a little bit of Bootleg Girl in them, where they indentify way too closely with the black female character of whatever show she just watched tries to claim them as her sole property.
