My elves are a bit bog-standard with my own twists. All originate from high elves, who were humans uplifted into the priestly caste of the dragon-ruled precursor civilization, with their modern counterparts originating from how they approached the collapse of these civilizations.
Modern high elves were typically those serving metallic dragons, who usually accompanied their masters in their journey into seclusion or stayed behind to try to preserve society for the sake of the humans and demi-humans now struggling to establish their own civilizations. These societies were eventually conquered by a dracolich’s empire, and most high elves that still survive on the continent 2000 years later, after the defeat of said empire and the fracturing of the continent into a strenuous peace between three countries, live semi-segregated urban lives. They tend to grumble about the current strife their ancestors were unable to prevent, but still support the human civilizations in hopes that their distant kin will be able to one day return to the continent’s past glory.
Wood elves were those elves that saw the rot and decay of the chromatic dragon’s civilizations and decided to break away from society altogether. They’ve become effectively Amish, wary of high technology and trying to devote their lives to the survival of their community above all else (a monumental task when you can live for millennia.) Like the real-world Amish, some are beginning to try reaching out to greater civilization and learning to create some of the technology their modern world has, even if it is only clock-punk at best.
As for the dark elves, they are the descendants of the priestly and ruling castes of the Dracolich Empire I talked about previously. Having stayed alongside their master until he was sealed away, they fled underground to a massive interconnected complex of bunkers, where a combination of inbreeding, cloning, and low-light conditions slowly turned what was once a rabble of humans and high elves into the modern Dark Elf. With pale skin and pale eyes, they have utilized the massive amounts of high-tier magitech in their bunkers to infiltrate human societies and work to rot them internally until the day they can find a new host for their master and restore their old empire.
