Read the whole article but TLDR 4 Corona viruses are endemic in the human population, with Covid-19 making 5.
They appear in 2 year cycles, due to the human immune system only providing transitory protection (6 months to a year) meaning long term herd immunity is impossible.
Even if we vaccinate everyone this will be the case and we'll be dealing with a real second wave of Covid infections some time in late 2022. The virus WILL mutate to evade the effects of the vaccines. We can try to constantly re calibrate the vaccines to account for the mutations, but given how we've thrown the rule book out to bring on stream the current ones, we're risking serious adverse effects if we keep doing this. It's not just the potential effects on the human immune system from using barely tested and novel technologies to induce antibody production we're also risking the virus cross reacting with one of the vaccines which may end up enhancing infection rather than suppressing.
What we should be doing is dealing with the chronic health issues in our own population which has led to a higher mortality rate from what is actually a fairly mild disease pathology. In particular the appalling rates of morbid obesity and the chronically low rates of serum Vitamin D.
The current pandemic is winding down and will be over by the summer. That's the good news. The bad news is the total lack of foresight from our public health officials and politicians in planning to deal with the next outbreak. We need to learn to live with the virus, to set out well researched treatment protocols for high risk patients (which has been badly neglected) and to improve the health of the general population.
So there's good news and bad I guess. This year will be better than 2020 for the virus. Schools and businesses will be re-opening, things will go back to relative normality. Dealing with the economic devastation caused by the lockdowns and money printing will be with us for decades to come, but at least we won't be kept locked in our homes like domesticated pets. But buckle up for 2022/23 and hope to God the mass vaccinations we're doing now won't make things a whole lot worse then.
