Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I heard a conspiracy theory that the giant lady from the newest Resident Evil game is either a way of telling us that there will be a release of giants like the Titans or the Nephilim. The giants will want to hook up with humans and the game is a way of feeling out people's reactions to giants and/or getting us used to the idea. So maybe Lady Dimitrescu can be a reality someday. Is that optimism? I have no idea. Sounds interesting though.
Interesting is still something, right? Mostly I have been distracting myself by learning to cuss in as many languages as possible, including BSL and doing voluntary work in my community. I grew up Mormon and have been helping my local ward members with cooking meals for the needy and stuff. If nothing else, its it's something, you know?

@Fliddaroonie Maybe now would be a good time to pick up a hobby that's hands-on, like crocheting or beading? I was doing gemstone bead necklaces for a little while, but since I have no where to wear them to, I've slacked off (plus no monies to spare for it at this time). Luckily I had an interview today for an at-home position with a pretty large IT firm, and am on the list for city jobs that may open up (guaranteed interview), but I too am having difficulty with the day-to-day.

Is your family close, Flid? Count that in your corner when tallying blessings, mine are three states away and my mom had a medical emergency just recently, so frustrating *sigh*. Hopefully you'll find creative ways to stave off the boredom and share some of them if you do, thanks!

I overheard grandma saying my uncle won't stop annoying her and telling her to take the vaccine. Leave her alone, she's doing much better than you!

People are pissed off at Canada for requesting access to the COVAX program they helped kick a bunch of money into back in september for "putting themselves first" over developing countries. The one fucking time Canada needs help because they are getting shafted on vaccine delivery dates is a problem. Yeah we should kill our economy so the third world can go back to spreading aids again.

If anyone wants to toss some optimistic thoughts my way right now I would appreciate that for sure. I know its it's pathetic, I know its derailing, so HMU with neg rated internet stickers pls. But if anyone has a shred or scrap of optimism to toss my drunk ass way, I'd appreciate that please.

(I know I'm pathetic, I get it,but it's been a slog recently and I'm struggling to think of good things)

Edited to say, even if it's your own good news,I'd love to hear that. I'm a miserable shit, but I can still be happy for people.
I did like a 20 minute super lame workout on my lunch break yesterday and was unreasonably happy and energetic the rest of the day, Not everything works for everybody, but sit ups and a jog around the block are cheep and easy to come by...

I got a chance to talk to my priest today. I was supposed to go to confession but ended up just chilling and talking about life. Just being able to be totally honest with someone who knows who I really am and can look at my real face, for one hour, took me from suicidal tier to "I can do this, just keep your chin up, spring will come" tier. We can help each other out of this, one mask-free conversation at a time.

Our four common cold coronaviruses have another intriguing feature: they ebb and flow. “For NL63, you have high years and low years,” says van der Hoek. “We found it more or less peaks every two years.” In addition, between 2000 and 2010, NL63 and OC43 infections were more common in children than 229E and HKU1 infections. “They are in competition,” she says. Esper has also observed the viruses hitting in relays. “Here in Ohio, we just had a banner year for HKU1,” he says, with 160 confirmed cases. OC43 was also quite common, but there were almost no cases of NL63 or 229E. “Maybe it's because our immune system revs up, gives protection for a couple of years, and then goes away,” he says.

Read the whole article but TLDR 4 Corona viruses are endemic in the human population, with Covid-19 making 5.

They appear in 2 year cycles, due to the human immune system only providing transitory protection (6 months to a year) meaning long term herd immunity is impossible.

Even if we vaccinate everyone this will be the case and we'll be dealing with a real second wave of Covid infections some time in late 2022. The virus WILL mutate to evade the effects of the vaccines. We can try to constantly re calibrate the vaccines to account for the mutations, but given how we've thrown the rule book out to bring on stream the current ones, we're risking serious adverse effects if we keep doing this. It's not just the potential effects on the human immune system from using barely tested and novel technologies to induce antibody production we're also risking the virus cross reacting with one of the vaccines which may end up enhancing infection rather than suppressing.

What we should be doing is dealing with the chronic health issues in our own population which has led to a higher mortality rate from what is actually a fairly mild disease pathology. In particular the appalling rates of morbid obesity and the chronically low rates of serum Vitamin D.

The current pandemic is winding down and will be over by the summer. That's the good news. The bad news is the total lack of foresight from our public health officials and politicians in planning to deal with the next outbreak. We need to learn to live with the virus, to set out well researched treatment protocols for high risk patients (which has been badly neglected) and to improve the health of the general population.

So there's good news and bad I guess. This year will be better than 2020 for the virus. Schools and businesses will be re-opening, things will go back to relative normality. Dealing with the economic devastation caused by the lockdowns and money printing will be with us for decades to come, but at least we won't be kept locked in our homes like domesticated pets. But buckle up for 2022/23 and hope to God the mass vaccinations we're doing now won't make things a whole lot worse then.

You will survive this.
The real pandemic isn't the weak-sauce coronavirus, its the fucking over-reaction. All those doomer mask faggots and power hungry lockdown politicians want you to give up at life and just roll over and quit. You have it in you to fucking beat them, my man!

Keep your head up, look forward to the day this ends and if shit is really that bad then start looking for new jobs and a new state/city if you have to.

2022? Just in time for the election! Or will we not have lockdowns because the Democrats don't want to hand the other team the House and the Senate? And if it's every two years, we'll get one in 2024 so once again we can use ultra-safe, secure, and reliable mail-in voting to save more grandmas!

Lockdowns will probably be too stale for the viewers by 2022. More likely for that season the story arc will go back to another white cop/black suspect killing controversy. It's been a hit and a reliable ratings boost for quite awhile now.
