Two 8-month-old pit bulls that were loose in Nanaimo attacked several children, severely injuring at least one. Other people that came to aid the children were also injured.

The children were playing in a yard at the house of one of their friends. The dogs were from somewhere else in the neighborhood and had been cited for being at large previously.

One of the owners of the dogs came and got the dogs but did not stick around. The news interviewed the other owner, a Dangerhair that looked to be in her late 40s or early 50s. While she was devastated at what her dogs had done, she said to the reporter, "People are saying, look at this from the prospective of a parent, well, these dogs are my kids, too," and then she broke down crying.

It was later reported both dogs were euthanized, as there have been other incidents prior to this one, and due to the severity of the injuries the one particular child sustained.

To the dangerhair dog owner I would have to say, "If these dogs were your KIDS, you did a lousy job of raising them. Thank heavens you didn't spawn any of your own."

I really hate that kind of shit too. Pit bulls may be insane killer dogs but they were born that way, even made that way, by humans. They don't deserve to die for that alone. I do think the breed should be peacefully sunsetted, or at least have its negative traits bred out, but existing animals still have rights and should be treated decently as long as they live.

You're not wrong, but as long as criminals and dog fighting rings exist, so will pits. As long as they are nice, they can be treated like normal dogs, but the moment they bite they cannot get a second chance because it's just far too dangerous. By default former fighting dogs can't be trusted since they're already proven maulers in the dog ring. Neither scenario is a chance worth taking, but unfortunately shelters muddy the history of dangerous pits, just say no other animals and no kids so they can pawn them off on unsuspecting people instead of humanely putting them down and putting time and energy into actually safe and adoptable animals.

You're wrong. I'll share this story again: my old man was in law enforcement. His partner of many years was about as experienced with dogs as you can be: had bred and trained them since childhood, K9 handler in the military and law enforcement, etc. He got two AKC Pit puppies from champion show dog breeders. He worked with them everyday and trained them for agility competitions. He never used negative training techniques or used physical punishment. Nothing but love and positive reinforcement. For years the dogs never showed any kind of aggressiveness, didn't even bark at strangers or other animals. They were nothing but "big, goofy sweethearts" who loved everyone. I had been around the dogs several times when we would go over for dinners, parties, barbecues, etc. and they were extremely friendly dogs. Until one day when he comes home to see both his dogs waiting for him at the door like normal, only this time covered in the blood of his wife and daughter. The dogs had snapped and mauled his family to death while he was at work. He took both dogs into his backyard, pulled his duty pistol, shot them both and then put the gun in his own mouth. This isn't a "I heard it from someone once, so it must be true!" type thing. These were people and dogs I knew personally and spent a lot of time with since it was my dad's partner and our families were close friends. So you are wrong and naive, and hopefully your dogs never get it in their heads to rip your throat out or kill anyone in your family.

I haven’t heard of them being particularly dangerous. Akitas yes. Shar peis mostly have health issues. Breathing issues due to flat faces, skin infections (both bacterial and fungal) due to the skin folds.

Apparently they are also prone to eye issues

Staffordshire Terriers are one of the breeds typically lumped in under the "Pit Bull" label due to them being closely related and bred for the same reasons. It's debatable that they ARE Pits, or just one of the breeds used to create the breed, but honestly it near as much makes no difference.
