Up until fairly recently (~2013-14, IIRC), the esports scene, and Starcraft in particular, still preferred to use CRT monitors, supposedly because the had a higher refresh rate than your standard 60fps monitor. Once modern screens started pushing the 120fps display rate, they seems to have mostly transitioned over.

I know some old games were designed to take advantage of the blurring effects of CRT, and actually can look worse with totally crisp pixels. Some also took advantage of the slight gap between pixels to alter the way their objects were shaded.
It's not just pixel art games - I remember seeing an interesting post about the FF12 remaster that argued some of the spirit was lost through the updated version.

I wonder how much Google is paying outlets to not cover the Stadia being shutdown and that 100% of all Stadia users have lost all their libraries or if so few people bought the Stadia and played it, that only a few people have noticed it and therefore it's not news.
All digital will never happen, if Apple went full retard into music and caused records to be revived, games will have a similar thing happen.
Limited Run games just put out a notice that they're now a big enough company to have even more open preorder numbers and possibly engage in second or third runs for in demand titles.

as for digital, if the pc is any indication it's the way it's gonna go. stadia was just too retarded imagining technical limitations don't exist, and you never really "owned" the games, certainly less like on steam.
any physical release like that is just an enthusiast market, like vinyl records.

Enthusiast markets have the odd behavior of starting stuff that goes mainstream. The entire reason how we got all digital in the first place was due to a different group of enthusiasts. They're a bit like opening a pandora's box, because for mainstream usually the #1 thing is "is it more convenient than the alternative or existing means".

I knew CRTs were going to be in demand (I kept my old 1024 crt for my windows XP PC to play old games on), but I thought it was because suppliers didn't make the parts because normies have no interest and there's not enough money to be made on the niche market. Calling it "lost technology" is dumb.
I hear people rant about physical media. This is true of DVD (cancelling shows and movies, and no one wanting to juggle 20 different streaming services), but for games physical media has long been shown to be pointless, with some discs just containing an installer. Most famous was that Tony Hawks game that was just the tutorial and the game had to be downloaded.

Those are only true for AAA western devs.
Last game that I got that required a download for nearly all the content was actually Spyro. But that's a rarity among most publishers and developers.

people buying vinyl won't stop the majority of people subscribing to spotify or buying on itunes, people buying blurays won't stop the majority of people subscribing to netflix or one of the other dozen streaming services. same way people who want to play a videogame won't order it on amazon then wait 24h till arrives in their mailbox, they want it now, consume it and move on. they couldn't care less about a box on the shelf their gf/wife won't allow to keep in the living room anyway. same way they don't care about losing access to games they already finished or stuff no one talks about anymore. there won't be a magical resurgence of physical media because people are lazy consoomers and the pros of digitally renting media far outweighs the cons for them. for that to happen you'd have to strangle everyone's internet access to make it more convenient to have stuff locally available again.
so, never? the way folks are investing on keeping a stable infrastructure on the internet for these services shows, when corona hit some services went down because of the overload and it was fixed rather quickly, got some retards angry on social medias but they sure managed to reinforce their trenches. aside from gaming that is, Battlefront2 and GTA5's servers were murdered by having the game being given for free and took a couple of days for fixes with the rage on the social.
what? all the news outlet mention only Stadia's internal game dev team being shut down, no way google would pull the plug on all stadia users...
i'd say a fair bunch, "mainstream" news sites like wccftech and pcgamer only said the whole internal dev team, all digital consooming taking a fat chunk of the market still works because of that instant gratification thing, it works and they know it. so much so that making a meem about subscribing to 1000 services is pointless and expensive is frequent that you can say it's facebook stuff.

not unless it becomes less convenient than physical or the attitude towards actual ownership changes. videogames for most people are now disposable products you consume and discard like music or videos (one of the reasons cinemas try their hardest to sell you an "experience" now). there's no "need" to have them available to you whenever you want when you only ever use them once and most people only ever use a few of all the available titles anyway. sucks but that's the way it is. fuck even I, who knows all that shit, still goes digital for a lot of stuff because I'm simply running out of space, and I don't really need a box of everything I consume.
not to defend digital, but another thing is that you only ever hear the individual horror stories and assumptions based on the worst case. for example it's simply not sensible for companies to cut off the access to your media nilly-willy when that means most of the time you'll stop being a customer as well. there's also still a license in place depending on the platform, the second steam goes down for good you can bet your ass lawsuits pop up everywhere, and depending on the outcome it might change people's enthusiasm towards the whole thing - which companies don't want either. that's why they gonna make sure you'll always be able to access your shit to consume and buy more, else it they won't make any more money, and that's all there is to it. issues affecting you personally have no bearing on the thousands or millions of people where it works without a hitch - not that a lot of the would care much to begin with, if netflix doesn't work that evening they'll just do something else or sub to amazon prime etc. (another reason they gonna make sure shit works).
